COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AleSmith X Extra Pale Ale is a clean, light-colored, light-bodied ale. The People's Choice award winner at the 2000 San Diego Real Ale Festival and the second runner-up in 2001, it has a good dose of dry hops balanced by a gentle sweetness, giving an almost sweet-and-sour effect. Appearance: Light golden color, and a nice white head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with almost tingling flavors of citrus and pine, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness. Aroma: Strong lemony-citrusy character, with sweet malt and pine in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, light-bodied.

bright sparkling beer, apricots, pepper, some grapefruit -- is this beer undamaged? -- funky, refreshing, easy drinking with significant hops.

Head is initially small, frothy, white, fully diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted bread), moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers, lemon), lightly yeasty (dough). Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Alesmith’s answer to SNPA, clearly. Pretty indistinct and simple. Kinda nice that the hops aren’t the floor polish kind that infests most from the west coast, but they still need more to back them up here.

Hoppy, floppy, right flap. Some of the notes get a bit hard to read at this point. After having so many big beers - cheers to hopsrus, racegoer, Jokes, and Marinaro500 - this one didn’t really strike me. Light with some notable hops.

Citrus/floral hop aroma. Soft, bubbly feel. Crisp, slightly burnt aftertaste.

The aroma packed quite a wallop as i could smell it from across the room after opening my 22 and looking for a glass to drink my delicacy. It effervesced citrusy florals..very heavily, followed up with pine, and something peppermint like. The pour was leaning more toward yellow than gold...a fairly light yellow, with a nice head if poured correctly which laces a bit down the glass..and makes for a creamy go down. The taste is not that complex however, but i will give it the fact that it is one of the more refreshing and drinkable beers i have ever had. I could easily drink this with the boys night and day i feel like. It begins with a veru quelched hoppy attack of the palate, followed by a sour aftertaste..which if you count..1....2...BAM.. turns into a malty sweetness. Very little malt hidden in there right til the end to surprise you, but it was a nice surprise indeed. Basically my biggest knock here is the lack of a true kick and the fact that i felt like i was drinking a high quality BMC...but understand that i mean a BMC the way a BMC SHOULD be made, but is never made. Its sound..its got a nice carbonated tongue tickling and some good pine aroma going on here...very doable as a kick back beer.

A nice example of the APA, if not a bit lackluster. Beer is an experience, much like a movie. This left me giving this a "marginal thumb's up." Pours suprisingly a bright yellow, with slight orange hue when held to light. Very spritzy on the pour, which may explain the generous head that accompanies. The aroma is lively though, with floral, and citrus very prominent. Taste is very herbal with slight hint of flowers and grains/bisquit in the middle. The finish is a nice hop zip. This though I expect from an APA. Very light, almost annoying as I long for a bit more from the body. Not a slick outing, and truly screams average in many areas. AleSmith truly produces some blockbuster outings, but this my friends is a mere rental.

Bottle (courtesy of Hogtownharry): Poured a light yellow color ale with a medium bubbly white head with average retention. Aroma of hops if mostly floral with small touch of ester, which was slightly displeasing. Taste is quite refreshing with a strong hops presence. Lighter body then expected but I didn’t mind because APA is a style that doesn’t necessarily gain from full body.

Bottle: Pale golden color; mild, hoppy and refreshing with a nice balance of nutty-malt sweetness. A fantastic summer beer.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2006 Lots of bubbles climb the glass to form a gentle white cover atop the shining hazy golden body. Aroma is rather straightforward and citric, tart with pine, lemon and fresh C-hops. Alright malt backbone, lemon pie and biscuity. Clean altogether and tarter than most which contributes to refreshment. Dry lasting hoppy finish. Light body with bubbles not as apparent as expected. Fine basic beer.
