COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AleSmith X Extra Pale Ale is a clean, light-colored, light-bodied ale. The People's Choice award winner at the 2000 San Diego Real Ale Festival and the second runner-up in 2001, it has a good dose of dry hops balanced by a gentle sweetness, giving an almost sweet-and-sour effect. Appearance: Light golden color, and a nice white head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with almost tingling flavors of citrus and pine, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness. Aroma: Strong lemony-citrusy character, with sweet malt and pine in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, light-bodied.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2013 Thanks jbruner! Clear golden pour with a white head. Caramel and bready malts accent the piney and citrusy hop nose. Slightly sweet, bready entry with nice zesty pine and citrus hop additions with a quick slightly bitter finish. Not bad at all, still would love to try it super fresh.

Pours a slightly cloudy golden yellow from the bottle with fluffy off-white head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is heavy west coast hops, slight back end of malt, but dank hoppiness abound. Taste is less hippy, more balanced with the bready grain. Probably the best extra pale I?ve ever had.

Bouteille 22oz.

Bottle from Larry, hazy straw pour with a thin head. Aroma of pineapple, earthy hops and some grain. Taste is very feint hops, some light citrus, bit disappointing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at RIBCO, pours a clear gold with a bubbly white head and a little bit of lacing, the aroma has a decent amount of citrus and hops, the flavor has some tropical fruit on the front end with a nice smooth finish, the mouthfeel was a little thin compared to what I was expecting, still tasty.

Pours cloudy yellow with a massive fluffy white head of foam that fell, lazily, almost wantonly, clinging and sticking to the glass. Left a thick cap and outrageous lace. Effervescent. Nose is very promising with lemon, biscuit and a little yeast. Toasted grain with a honey sweetness on top of mellow citrus. Smidgen of mild pepper. Grainy and husky with a touch of pine. Malt opens up round and plentiful and sweetens deeply as it warms. Taste is light pale malt up front accompanied by lemon rind, faint pineapple and a little pepper. Crisp. The toasted grain gives it a nice body and the fruits are just tart and wash over the palate. No heavy pine oil or resins but a small piney taste to go with a little orange. There is no freshness date so it’s impossible to know if the hops, which are subtle have faded. Hops are herbal and floral overall. Great balance between the breaddy, tasty malt and the mellow fruits. Body is thin and watery, on the heavier side of light with a small bite from the carbonation. Finishes clean with a mild bitter and tartness then fades pleasantly and slowly. Simple, refreshing and sessionable. A great beer.

For a brewery that has 3 beers in the Ratebeer Top 20, I found this quite disappointing. I realize that context is important (this is certainly no Imperial / Double / Royale with Cheese) so maybe it’s like someone telling you to go listen to Dylan and you pick up a copy of Down In The Groove. Will try more albums.

22oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a clear pale gold with minimal head. Aroma of loads of citrus and a little caramel. Taste of citrus. Grapefruit and orange zest. Liggt bodied with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, pretty good. Id drink it again.
