Alexander Ambrée is our interpretation of the French country Bière de Garde style – that’s almost extinct. In recent years, with the revival of craft beer in Europe and the US, this style was rediscovered and many craft breweries offer their personal interpretation to it. The beer’s amber color comes from using special roasted malts that give the beer – apart from its reddish color – a special complexity of flavors and aromas.

33cl bottle. They call it a biere de garde and i can maybe see it, definitely meant to be a more malt-forward amber.

It poured an amber color with a white head. The aroma was of malts, biscuits, some caramel and earthy notes. The taste was similar to the aroma with malty sweetness, caramel and hops. Nice.

Bottle 330ml. Slightly hazy copper with small off-white head. Sweet aroma, fruity (peach, apricot), grainy, syrupy, hint of dulce de leche. Sweet flavor, some fruitiness, grainy, corn, faint cooked vegetables notes, semi-dry sour finish. Light carbonation, light to medium-bodied. Dull.

Draught at The Brothers restaurant in Tel Aviv. Amber color, some light caramel, fairly decent. Not sure why it is Biere de Garde.

While their "interpretation" of the style may be somewhat loose, this is still an enjoyable and distinctive brew. Recognizable as a Bier de Garde, although not as strong and flavorful as my past encounters with this variety of beer. Very soft both on the palate and the taste. Aroma is pleasant, brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel malt. Slightly aged accent. Appearance is strange, very carbonated almost like a champagne, nice copper amber color. Flavor of yeast, fruits, not-quite-roasted malts, and caramel. Nice flavor profile, but I wish more flavorful. Finishes slightly sour and bitter. Intriguing overall, I am becoming increasingly interested in this style.

330ml bottle, hazy amber colour, small fully vanishing off-white head, little lacing. Moderately malty aroma of nuts, hay and raisins with moderate herbal hops and a hint of leather. Taste is initially slightly bitter and moderately acidic with a hint of sweetness. Medium body, oily texture, lively carbonation. Decent amber ale, not overly complex and I have doubts it tastes anything like a biére de Garde though I have little experience of the style. Enjoyable anyways.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber body with a small white head. Nose is loads of nutty aromas; hazel, mild almond, walnut, with tones of bread, cinnamon and mild nougat. Some red fruits and raisins in the back. Taste is mellow bready malts, mild nuts and cinnamon with hints of raisins and fruity yeast esters lingering in the back. Medium body and somewhat stinging carbonation, which doesn’t suit the beer so well IMO. Nevertheless a quite nice interpretation of the BdG style, and quite drinkable.

355 ml bottle bought at YATA in Grand Century Place, Mong Kok.

Cloudy, hazy amber red colour with dirt-like yeast sediments; Three-quarter finger head and off-white foam which last for about 30 seconds; Moderate sticky lacing with notable slight carbonation; Aroma of dark malt, ale malt, caramel, grapefruit, light toffee, light yeast, earth, and very light straw; Medium sweet taste of ale malt, with refreshing light grapefruit, toffee, molasses, biscuits, yeast, light lemon, and very light grass; Light body, thin and slick palate; Mouth feel is pleasantly sweet English pale ale base mixed with right slap of roasted malt, plus pretty refreshing grapefruit which puts a lot of so called IPAs and Blonds to shame. Fairly good caramel and toffee thickness and sweetness, and yeasty enough without being too dry. Nice! Hoppiness is refreshing light citrus + earthy nose and taste, and astringency works very slowly for a muted and comfy finish; Slightly dry after taste, very easy and fruity to mouth.

Comments: The brewery’s official website describes this one as its own version of Bière de Garde, but I think it’s too simple to be considered as such. It’s more in line with Amber Ale, with very assertive and refreshing grapefruit, good caramel, slick toffee, and fairly yeasty as well. A very enjoyable Amber to round up the night. Lovely!
