Commercial Description:

A classic smooth dark mild. Hints of caramel and a very slight hoppy finish.

Cask conditioned at Banbury Beer Fest ’08. Dark brown with slight head. Slightly thin, sweetish mild with hints of pulpy fruit, but thats where it stays. In the end just a little dull but definitely drinkable.

Red-brown, nice friendly tan head that settles quickly. Initially a sulfur nose, give way to plumy caramel and a touch of green walnut. Leafy slick minderal malt flavor with a little smoke exhale. Pleasant body for the abv. Not an exceptional mild, but one that at least understands what makes milds fun. (Previous rating: Gravity, Banbury Beer Festival. Ruby-brown, small light tan head. Odd aroma--soggy corn flakes and farm. Light apple esters, a toasty warmth that is kind of nice, but doesn’t lift this beer out of being pretty dissappointing. 4/3/6/3 10)

Cask (handpump) at Ye Cracke, Liverpool, April 2008 I noted this down as 3.4% but that was probably just my mistake. Dark red/brown. Lasting, soft beige head. Smooth roasty flavour. Touch of burnt bitterness on the finish. Not too thin but slips down very easily. Nothing shouts out but that is what a good mild is about. And this is an exemplary one.

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 1 Dec 2007) Dark brown colour with ruby hints, brief beige head. Slightly roasted, malty nose with dark fruit and faint traces of raw fish. Malty taste with notes of dark fruit, dried figs and wild berries. Decent mild, but lacking something extra.

A Mes rate: Cask at the Wenlock.
Deep dark brown colour. Sweet and nutty aroma with lots of malt and dark fruit. Really nice. Nutty and dusty in the mouth with some slight hoppage for balance and a sweet malty finish. Tasty mild with plenty of character and easily the best sample of an All Gates beer I have had.
