COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dunkel, meaning dark, this German-style beer brings together dark specialty malts with the smoothness of a lager. It has a toasted malt aroma, light body and a quenching crispness. Jeff won a Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival with this beer (2002)

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2012 Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a very dark brown - almost black - with a small beige head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was sweetish and toasty with a light sour caramel presence and a bit of wood. The flavor was malty and a touch roasty with nutty and woody notes and a bock like sour caramel presence. Fairly long finish dominated by nut and caramel with a touch of cocoa underneath. Fairly full bodied and smooth. Interesting.

Growler from Brewery: This one pours a ruby tinged, clear brown color. There was a small tan head on it that left a little lacing. The aroma is nice. Caramel malts, a hint of sourness, some fruits. Hints of roastiness also. The taste is also quite good. Slightly sweet caramel malts with a faint sourness in the finish. Some fruits also. Very smooth and easy drinking. The brewer told me this is essentially the same beer he brewed at the old Red Star under the same name. That’s a good thing, since I used to enjoy it in my trips to the area. Glad to have it back!
