zeke626 (302), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 22, 2009 Bottle, batch 4. Pours a nearly opaque brown body with red hues and a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, and bread/yeast along with a hint of coffee. Flavor is mainly roasted and burnt malts with cocoa, coffee, and tar/smoke flavors. Medium bodied with a smooth, slightly oily mouthfeel; lightly carbonated. This isn’t too bad, but tends to taste one-dimensional after a few drinks as the roasted malt flavor tends to dominate. timsilvia32 (445), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Mar 17, 2009 750ml. Nice black pour with a creamish colored head. Roast aromas, mocha and some light fruits, red/banana? Tastes was a good mix of roast malt, cocoa, very light coffee. A little brown sugar, cinnamon roasted pecans. Really don’t get the banana flavors I head about and lightly smelled in this. If the body was just a little heavier this could easily pass as a good stout. Finished dry and clean. Normally I don’t care for Belgian style ale’s of any sort, but this passed the grade with flying colors. crazyvin (1246), New York, USA Mar 15, 2009 on tap at the gingerman. A nice black body with a thin tanish head that had nice retention.Aroma had a great smoke note to it as wellas sweet roasted coffee and molasass notes. Flavor was more sweet than bitter but stillnice. A little on the heavy side, which is always good with this style. finish was somewhat dry. joebudzjoe (222), Connecticut, USA Mar 10, 2009 Tap @ Monster B’s. Thin black body with minimal head. Much of what to expect from a black lager except there’s a hint of black cherry undertone. Definitely a interesting beer. The commercial description talks about its chocolatey flavor, but I missed that. JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Mar 9, 2009 Pours a semi-dark brown with thin tan head. Roasty malt, chocolate, fruit (raisin and fig), with some hops in the finish. Medium - light body. It’s alright, nothing worth getting excited about though. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Mar 7, 2009 on tap at Taco Mac, Crabapple. Nice deep black with tan head (not sure what it looked like upon pour). Big huge smooth silky body with chocolate, big coffee and deep roasted malts. Nice finish with a touch of bitterness to round it out. Overall an excellent Belgian style stout that is worth exploring again. JJClark (545), Roscoe, Illinois, USA Mar 6, 2009 Bottle (750ml). Pours a black color with an average size tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, hops, hint of fig and plums. Taste of oasted malt, sugar, yeast, fruit and chocolate. Has a nice smooth semi bitter finish. MaltOMeal (642), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Mar 5, 2009 bottle shared by someone at the February Beer Advocate stout Tasting. Pours black with a thin, off-white head. Nose is of nuts and cola. Taste is similar with roast malt and coffee. Mouthfeel is medium and bitter. This doesn’t taste like a stout as much as a mix with a brown ale. Meh.
