Body-dark brown with a thin ring of bubbles. Nose-dry, tea, tannic. Taste-nut shells, rye, tea, light perfume, brown ale notes, pecan shells, very enjoyable. I could drink this all day, everyday. BMan1113VR (2758), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Feb 20, 2009 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a hazy deep brown with a light brown head atop. Aroma of chocolate, hard toffee, nuts, tobacco, and candi sugar. Taste is roast, chocolate, coffee, lactose, alcohol, and Belgian yeast. Taste is light bubbles and a bit viscous. Swalden28 (1442), McKinney, Texas, USA Feb 20, 2009 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a deep, dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of fresh roasted grain. Flavor of dark roasted grain with a faint sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium body with high carbonation, kinda watery though. Overall, pretty good stuff! HolidayBeerGuy (50), Detroit, Michigan, USA Feb 18, 2009 750mL bottle, good dark color, not quite black. Nose included caramel and cocoa. Flavors of chocolate, vanilla, very smooth finish. ratman197 (3141), Arvada, Colorado, USA Feb 16, 2009 750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting creamy tan head. Aromas of charcoal, bakers cocoa, light carmel and light vanilla. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolate, carmel, vanilla and light roastiness with a smooth lightly sweet lightly roasty finish. smashteroid (227), USA Feb 12, 2009 Served from 750ml bottle. Pours dark brown/black with a soft tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Black fall somewhere in between the sweet and dry categories of most true Belgian stouts. The flavor was very sweet with lots of chocolate and roasted malts, but the finish was much more dry. Overall a remarkably fine beer. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Feb 11, 2009 750mL, no date thanks to GeneralGao (Colin) for giving this to me some time ago. Pours a clear ruby with a 1 1/2 finger creamy beige head, great retention. Roasted malts and dark chocolate are up front with a good dose of the unmistakable aroma of Belgian yeast. There’s also a bit of powdered sugar, hazelnuts, and a tinge of spicy alcohol. The flavor has the roast character slightly restrained, but there’s plenty of chocolate to make up for it. There is also a little bit of vanilla notes along with the aforementioned Belgian yeast. Semi-dry and roasty (and vanilla-y) in the finish with the bitterness peaking around a 3. Light to moderate creamy carbonation with a medium body. I figured this would be average, but it turned out to be a very tasty beer.
