Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

4 beers in. It is straight up black goodness. First, it smacks you in the nose with a whopping dose of coffee and dark chocolate. When you stick it in your mouth, you quickly realize that it is packing: a strong roasty, toasty astringency. This is a smooth operator of a beer. Don’t mess with this one! In the end, the black version of the Allagash white is just bigger.

Very nice toasted malt with a distinct Belgian character. I really like this beer and could drink it all night. Not too rich to mask the Belgian qualitys, but rich enough to get the stout notes in there. Very tasty.

Draft at the Great Lost Bear in Portland - Poured a very dark brown/black in color with a small tan head. Aroma was strong of darkly roasted malts, coffee yeast and brown sugar. Flavor was strong of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and bready yeast. Medium bitter. This is a good one...

This black ale poured with a fluffy brown head. There is a heavy carbonated malt flavor with notes of chocolate, treacle and coffee, and a dry bitter finish.

Bottle from Canals, sampled with Stegosaurus..Black pour with thin tan head. Nice spicey, cocoas aroma. Flavor is a bready, spicey chocolate with a hint of smoke and coffee back bite. I enjoyed this.

The Dan Journal #171. Tasted 5/3/08. 750ml bottle. Pitch brown hue. Layer of taupe head. Coffee and slight raisins in the aroma. Slight berries and cocoa. Full bodied and crisp yet bitter. Nice yeasty citrus flavor. Typical belgian yeast character. Good sticky malts. Rye bitterness. Tangy and the yeast character is a little too overt. It’s what it is, Belgian styled.

750 ml. Three finger head that leaves nice lace. Aroma is charred coffee beans and hickory wood, lightly sweetened with molasses, and some light whiffs of citrus-bready yeast. Flavor is espresso, peppery green hickory, dry cocoa, charred oak, vanilla, and molasses. Some slight bubblegum, brown sugar, and yeast show up a bit later in the glass. This is the least sweet Foreign Stout I have tasted to date, but that isn’t a bad thing. Heavy body is smooth and slightly dry.
