Juelze (889), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Apr 11, 2008 Pours a black color with a thick tan frothy head that fades quickly. Aroma is of dark roasted malt, chocolate, light belgian spice and light lcorice. Taste is the same as the aroma with a bit more emphasis on the with the belgian yeast. Smooth and creamy body. Good beer. papajohn (1054), San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA Apr 11, 2008 750 bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar: Black in color with a medium, fading, frothy light brown head. Aroma is a little spice, yeast and cocoa. Flavor starts kinda fruity with dark chocolate, belgian spice, a hit of coffee and a touch of smoke Full creamy mouth feel with moderate to lively carbonation. bsierra (213), Vista, California, USA Apr 9, 2008 On taps at Newport Pizza. Pours BLACK, as I expected it would. Nose was that of deep rich malts and hints of coffee. The taste was dominated by heavy malt and coffee bean with notes of dark chocolate and an interesting yeast component. The mouthfeel was full and the finish was smooth and enjoyable! A very stand up stout~ mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Apr 9, 2008 Bottle from BevMo, Mission Valley. Pours a very dark color, pretty much black in appearance. Strong roasted malt/coffee seem to dominate the aroma. I think I might be able to smell a little yeastiness. Tastes mostly of bitter coffee up front. The finish seems to have a bit of Belgian spiciness that mellows out the coffee finish. Pretty enjoyable. xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Apr 9, 2008 Aroma is bread, cocoa, some esters, and just the barest whisper of chocolate covered fruit.
Taste is sharp red fruit, some more cocoa, and Belgian esters.
Finishes with some creamy, yet fizzy, cocoa, and strange yeasty Belgian essences I usually ascribe only to Duvel and Orval.
Very interesting. juiceisloose (634), Windermere, Florida, USA Apr 8, 2008 This one poured a deep black color with a thin tan head that dissipated quickly and left minimal lacing behind. The aroma was of dark chocolate, roasted malts, a touch of smoke, and some belgian candy sugar. The taste was much the same with the dark chocolate and roastd malts leading the way with a funky belgian yeast taste on the back end. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation that left a chocolaty yeast flavor behind. This was pretty good for a foreign stout, but I don’t think it was their best effort. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 7, 2008 Bottle: Pours a dark brown to black with a tan head. Aroma, roasted notes, Belgian yeast, roasted notes, some chocolate. Flavor, roasted malts, chocolate, yeast, some spices, bready notes, grains. fishingnet (1045), Brandon, Florida, USA Apr 6, 2008 Bottle Pours dark brown with a two finger lasting tan head that leaves good lacing.
