Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

Don’t get me wrong this was tasty in it’s own right, but I was not wowed by it like I expected to be, and like I have been by most Allagash beers. This was just slightly on the mediocre side for my tastes. Pours a thick bubbly black color, with a surmountable tan head. Comes across very sweet and malty and less expressive on the yeasty side, and turns to be slightly one-dimensional. Very soft and creamy on the palate, and very warming. Decent, but could have been better for the amount of money it costs.

April(?) 2008: Allagash Black is very dark brown to near black in color with an ivory-colored head. It is dry and roasty with Belgian fruits and chocolate, hints of spice, and char. This beer is quite good overall!

750 mL corked and caged bottle (7.5% Alc. by Vol.) shared by Lance. Thanks! Rating #373 for this beer.

Bottle at the Cuvee de Castleton release at Captain Lawrence. Pours a deep dark black with a thin tan head. Thin to medium bodied with some nice chocolate tones and a good strong roast element to it.
