Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

Bottle at the Cuvee de Castleton release at Captain Lawrence. Pours a deep dark black with a thin tan head. Thin to medium bodied with some nice chocolate tones and a good strong roast element to it.

Corked bottle
Black color; medium head. It has light coffee and caramel aroma. Good body structure, caramel flavor and some chocolate, quite round, good bitterness. Solid, good, even if not exceptional.

Poured tar black with a touch of ruby highlights when held to the light. Noce tan head, a solid film and very nice lacing. Coffee and licorice aromas are most evident, accompanied by a sense of espresso and smokiness. Smokiness is stronger on the tongue, but chocolate and caramel flavors also are featured. Medium to full body, silky texture, and a bitter chocolate lingers in the end.

Bottle - thanks mcox90. Pours a deep brown with a finger of creamy tan head. Aroma is rich with roasty cocoa and coffee notes. Flavor is again heavy in the roast with more espresso coming through and lighter chocolate. As it warmed, the roast mellows out a bit with more of the cocoa coming through. Delicious.

750mL bottle. Poured deep garnet-tinted brown with a creamy, well-retained cap of beige head. The aroma picked up slightly sour cocoa and coffee notes with a dry roast to ’em.. some earth and sweet vanilla accents.. decent balance. The flavor had a blend of sweeter and darker chocolates at the core with mild earth and coffee bitterness surrounding.. burnt black patent, vanilla, and cocoa on the edges.. oaky and coffee sourness returned a bit on the finish along with a touch of smoke, leaving a tangy impression. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated on the palate.. OK transition from the creamier middle to the tangier sides.. tasty, memorable finish. I also had this on tap when it was released, but didn’t rate it.. I remember thinking about 4.2 from that experience.

Good black, deep ruby colour with a thin tan frothy head. Thick chocolate, roasted malt, coffee bean aroma. Fruit and berries in the flavour which give the tangy feel. Bitter dark chocolate finish. Very nice.

I bet Ross loves this beer. Draft at Small Bar in Chicago. Pours black with a retentive beige head. Aroma of yeast, esters, and smoke. Medium to full bodies with a soft creamy texture. The flavor was a bit odd or unique, with a melding of molasses, smoke, funk, coffee grounds, and chocolate. There is a subtle german smoke beer and/or dopplebock quality to it combined with a slight sour tang.

Received as a gift. Pours a dark black color. Aroma was not strong at all. Flavor was much better than the aroma. Very roasty with malty chocolaty goodness. Different for a stout because of the belgian yeast. Pretty tasty.
