COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

On tap at the bricstore. Nice roasted malt aromas and flavors bordering on the chocolate side of things. Smooth and slightly sweet, vanilla and faint oak flavors give this one some complexity. Very nice and very glad the brickstore got this one on tap.

The fizzy light tan head disperses rather quickly from this dark brown ale. The nose is greeted first by the hops, pine and floral, followed by some rich roasted dark malts, bittersweet chocolate, and my Mom’s old coffee. It’s medium bodied with just a bit too much carbonation, in my humble estimation. Still, the flavors from the scents from the nose carry well into the taste of the Stout, the hoppy bitterness increasing somewhat, and a bit of aniseed and smokiness join the fray. Over all, a very decent brew.

750 ml bottle shared with willblake purchased at Spirits RB. Pours a thin clear black with deep reddish highlights dancing around the outer edges and a HUGE light tan foamy head. Aroma of yeast, dry chocolate pudding, dirt and flowers. Smooth mediu body with lively carbonation. Flavor of dry chocolate and yeast. This beer is nice but I guess this style hasn’t really grown on me yet unlike the genital warts on my ex which grew on her very nicely.

Bottle. Notes of chocolate and candy aroma (burnt caramel?), rounded off with a strong malt aroma. Dark brown in color with reddish hues and an off white/tan head. Flavors were nice, a balance of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malts. Medium bodied, slightly too much carbonation at first but it has a very nice dry coffee(slight) finish. Overall this a really good beer and I think aging will improve this beer. The carbonation and strong alcohol feel is a bit overpowering at times. I hope it will mellow a bit with age. Good offering by Allagash.

Bottle from porterhouse and served in my Expedition snifter, THANKS! Nearly opaque with some reddish highlights at the top and bottom topped by a fading frothy head and left spotty lace upon the glass. The aroma has notes of sharp black patent and chocolate malt, oatmeal, some resiny hops, hint of fig and plum esters, burnt candi sugar, and coffee vapours. A very aggressive (but nice) nose on this beer which should mellow through time.

The taste starts with equal amounts of sweet malt, sugar, fruit and chocolate. The finish slows more of the bitter notes of hop and coffee with a dash of smoky tones. I am happy than there is NOT a funky sourness with this that is found often in Belgian Styled Stouts. Well I like that in JP version I don’t think it would have fit here.

The mouth feel is sprite and sharp which cleanse the palate well. Could be a touch thicker but still works for me. Overall I like this beer and would like to see one with 6-12 months age on it.

Draft @ BSP. Pours a near opaque black with thick off-white head. Nose is of hay, wheat, roasted malts, noble hops. Pretty smooth on the palate, not too much going on flavor wise, roasted, slightly smokey, with a strong coffee character but otherwise not too mind-blowing. A little disappointing for Allagash.

notes of hops in aroma along with some chocolate and caramel malts. black color with a small, creamy tan head. nice roasty flavors with notes of toast, sweet grainy cereal, nuts, coffee and chocolate. i do think it’s a little over-carbonated though.

750 ml corked, caged bottle. Pours turbid blackish with 3-fingers or so of khaki head and nice lacing. The aroma is wheaties dipped in dark chocolate syrup, raisins, figs, mild funk, and mild hops and spice. The taste was dark malty, with some chocolate and cinnamon noted, plus figgy fruit and finishing hops. I call this a mild disappointment, as I was expecting a bit more, and I didn’t notice the coffee aroma or flavor that others seem to have.
