COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. UPDATED: FEB 2, 2015 At Fork on Lincoln. Brownish black slightly sweet stout with coffee taste and aroma. Easy to drink for it’s strength. Flavors come together nicely. Serving: Tap

Poured from a bottle black with a sandy colored head. Aroma is of alcohol and slight coffee. Light and somewhat bubbly on the tongue, first hint is of coffee finishing with chocolate and malt.

Poured from bottle black with brown foamy head. Aromas of belgian yeast coffee and chocolate. Taste is sweet chocolate and cocoa with a smooth grain feel slightly bitter at the end. A drinkable but not memorable beer.

Pours black from a bottle with a small khaki head with large bubbles, quickly dissipating. Aroma is of licorice or anise. Flavor is a very slightly smoky coffee and cola. Good beer.

Off white head that is 2 1/2 fingers in depth and dissapates quickly. Mahogany Brown in color with that amber hues. Not getting much in the aroma, just some funky earth notes. The taste is better. The taste has a definite roasty character with dark chocolate present throughout. Also getting a nutty character in this beer. The mouthfeel is a little thinner then I would like. Not a bad beer, but I was expecting more.

Really dark brown pour with no notable head. Aroma of belgian waffles, sweet chocolate, a bit of sweeter fruit. Average carbonation, really clean effervescent finish. Taste of chalky grain, a bit of ashy/mesquite smoke, melon, malty chocolate, belgian yeast, deeply roasted coffee.

12oz bottle from Wegmans, West Seneca, NY. A hazy dark chestnut pour with a ring of beige head; oaty aroma with a touch of chocolate; silky milk chocolate taste, with a sweet grainy body, and a pleasant bitterness; the finish is dry with obvious alcohol and some coffee grounds.

On tap at Thirsty Monk Downtown downstairs. Pours dark and imposing- decent head. Typical dark beer notes- roast, chocolate, coffee with the Belgian notes subtle but effective. Medium to big mouthfeel and really smooth. Perfect for a cold winter’s night.

Alengrin (2739) - BELGIUM - DEC 20, 2014
Stout from Allagash with thin but stable, light beige head and pure black colour, not allowing any light to shine through. Very pleasant, quite strong, enticing aroma of Belgian chocolates, coffee, banana, cocoa powder, raisins, dried orange peel, dates, candi sugar, sherry, cinnamon, lemon zest. Sweet, candied fruits in onset, brown sugar or candi syrup sweetness, banana and orange peel, after which a thick but soft and mellow, deep chocolatey maltiness unfolds, smooth and velvety, a bit more powdery in the finish, with gentle, mouth-filling, coffee-like roasted bitterness, creamy malt sweetness, a lemony sourish touch and peppery hop touch; the alcohol remains well hidden. Indeed this has a Belgian yeast touch to it, reminded me a bit of Struise’s Black Albert. Well done.

12 oz bottle from BOTW (Rochester), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep mahogany with a fair orange-tan head. Aroma: Starts with a tangy funk of infection (dang), dark-roasted malt notes, a little burnt malt, hints of molasses, mainly infection...a shame. Palate: Medium+ body with very full, silky carbonation. Flav.: More of the true beer character with less infection, dark roasted malt, milk chocolate, faint molasses, dark treacle, brown sugar, still has a nasty backdrop; dry with moderate bitterness, slightly tangy, with a long, dark-roasted malt finish.

Seems like it would be good if not infected. That’s too bad.

Bottle share. Hazy dark brown. Aroma of Belgian yeast, chocolate, coffee, prunes. Taste is bittersweet. Creamy smooth dry finish.
