The aroma is quite roasty, with hints of raw meat, mild chocolate, and plenty of spicy yeast. The flavor is roasted malt, a little bit of coffee, and a sharp acidic twang to start. It softens as it moves through the mouth, and it picks up some ashy and extremely earthy tastes. The finish is on the dry side. This is some good stuff here. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA

Aroma is licorice, spice, chocolate, caramel, roast and some darker fruit notes. Medium bodied, sweet to dry finish. Reminded me of some other Belgian stouts, so in that regard the beer achieved success. swoopjones (1933), Buffalo, New York, USA

Aromas of roasted malts, cocoa, coffee. Light body but nice flavor. Mild bitterness, sweetness in finish. Has a little strange twist probably due to Belgian yeast. Black pour and a tan head that dissipates quickly. nose is chocolate with that belgian funk. slight roastiness in the back of the throat, but less than I would expect. It balances well. hops are slightly noticable, but rather subdued. slight alcohol warming. Kevin (1920), Colorado, USA

Dark body that is brown around the edges, very loose bubbled head. Roast chocolate nose with a musty note, and a fruit scent that carries the yeast note nicely. Fruity taste that turns to roast quickly and finishes burnt. Dusty flavor throughout, not all that pleasant, does not develop over time, same flavors at the end of the bottle as the beginning, gets a bit more yeasty, but the roast is just too dominant for me. Some smoky flavors. The fruity notes do not balance and the chocolate is just not strong enough. Very similar to hercule. A bit tart at some points. I have to start staying away from Belgian stout type beers yet to find one I enjoy.

Sweet nose, lots of chocolate and coffee, plus a light yeasty note. Lots of sweet coffee goodness in the flavor, roasty malt, bittersweet chocolate and light anise. Medium body. Roasty malt finish, lightly bitter and somewhat dry. Nice! frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 4, 2008 A soft yet sudsy mocha head fades rather quickly over a deep brown body bronzed with garnet highlights. Sweet grape/taffy aroma with chocolate malt and light roastiness beneath. Full and fluffy in the mouth. Flavor is chocolaty with moderately cloying sugars. Mild coffee roasts make attempts at bittering, but the sweetness is quite dominating. Some vinous notes in the finish. Drinking this was comparable to craving some high quality chocolate and biting into some cheapo off-brand. Drinkable, but I winced a lot. ~~~~~750 ml of unknown origin, consumed December 2008.
