Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

Dark brown with a big tan head. Good retention. Nice aroma of chocolate and toffee. Anise, chocolate, coffee, roastiness, and yeast. Aftertaste of dark chocolate that is somewhat sour. Some dark fruit shows up late. Feels thin at times and rich and creamy at others. A unique stout and a delight to sample.

Bottle. Pours opaque dark brown with a lasting light tan head. The aroma is kind of light. Roast, chocolate, all the usual suspects. All the flavors are pretty much balanced all the way though. A bit of roast, and a bit of chocolate, and a bit of char. Medium/light body with a pleasant amount of carbonation. Roasty dry finish. This is a fine beer, but not really as complex as the finer examples of a foreign stout.

Excellent beer. Wow am I glad I got to try this. $4.75 for a pint instead of $12 for a bottle, and at a bar too..I was surprised to say the least. The roast on this one is very light, and it tastes of fresh toffee and caramel instead of traditional burnt coffee and chocolate. Very welcoming ale that drinks like a potently flavorful low-alcohol because of how smooth it is. Toffee, dark and light, and heavy caramel are the extent of the complexity of this beer, but it was extremely enjoyable.

sampled with the phoenix crew... reddish blackish brownish color (mix and match, take your pick) with orange at the edges. it’s topped by a creamy tan head which leaves some spotty lacing. mellow aroma of grain, chocolate, floral belgian yeast, some coffee/nuttiness and a hoppy/herbal/stick-like dryness. the flavor is very familiar yet i’ve never tasted this before... woodsy, malty grain, chocolate, toasted nuts and a little yeast. dry mildly bitter finish. a very pleasant grainy coffee aftertaste lingers for quite a while. medium-ish body. terribly light and drinkable. creamy soft carbonation makes this so silky and smooth. this beer is really warming... not hot or boozy. rather there is something comfortable about it?...

Bottle. Pours black with a small ring of tan head. Aroma of roast, coffee, and sweet roasted malt. Flavor of lots of coffee and roasted malt, some peanut brittle and roasted nuts. A nice body- very rich, silky, smooth, and creamy. So drinkable for a stout. Quite enjoyable. I would like to see more Belgian characteristics in this one however.

From a growler filled at Bellport Beer and Cold Soda. Pours black with a moderate, dense, light brown head that lasted through three-quarters of the glass and left a light coating with each sip. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, lightly roasted malt, and a few notes of coffee. There is quite a bit of chocolate in the flavor, along with some lightly roasted malt. After several seconds, a very nice hazelnut flavor emerges. Only slightly bitter at the finish. Very rich, silky mouthfeel. Delicious!
