Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

Pours black into a Trappist glass. Mocha head recedes to hug rim. Sour chocolate aromas. Crisp with upfront caramel and chocolate and a lasting hoppy espresso finish.

This is a hard hitting stout. Very heavy on the chocolate and coffee malts but they are washed out by the high alchol content and smokiness. This is a great stout but nothing that screams unique or origional.

Damn right! this is a stellar beer. Black pour, nice brown head. aroma is chocolate, belgian yeast, molasses and anise. Flavor is delicious. Chocolate, yeast, dark fruit, charred wood and some slight hops make this a very nice sipper. Kudos to Allagash!

Trade with After4ever, thanks Tom. It’s black with a red hue and a huge, creamy head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, cough medicine, licorice, anise and rubber. The flavour has sweetness, notes of anise, rubber, licorice, roasted malt, yeast, chocolate and a very light bitterness. I’m never thrilled when brewers mix Belgian and US styles, and this beer is no exception. It’s good, certainly, but not one I would buy, if it came to the country.

25 oz bottle, from Julio’s Liquors. Pours a very dark brown, almost black body with a creamy chocolate brown head that lasted forever. Roasty and chocolaty nose with a nice yeast influence. Coffee, roasted peanuts, and some burnt malt. I’m liking the Belgian twist with this guy. Very smooth up front, soft roast with a light bitterness. Finishes with lots of chocolate and yeast, and lingering coffee. No alcohol flavor at all, which often bothers me with Allagash beers. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy in texture with maybe just a bit too much carbonation. This was pretty great. Very very much a surprise. Usually I set myself up for a bit of a disappointment with Allagash, but this is now a favorite from them.

Pours a brownish-black with an excitable tan head. Aroma is dark malt, chocolate, a hint of coffee, black licorice, and earth with a lingering hop bite and coffee bitterness that continues on into the finish. Not bad.
