COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

Corked bottle.
Pours with a beautiful black yet with a mellow (too mellow) aroma of weak nuts and coffee malt. Flavor is a rush of raspberry chocolate syrup and coffee-soaked malt. Decent mouthfeel. Not bad, but just above average.

Darker brown pour with a medium head. Aroma is a bit grainy with some light chocolate and dark bread. Flavor is mostly a brown ale thats light on the nuttiness and a tad heavier on the chocolate. Not bad, but pretty weak for Allagash.

Draft...I was hopeful about this beer. Very dark in color, very much like a brown more so than a stout. Average sweetness. Little head. Carbonation was minimal. Alcohol not really noticeable. One thing I did not like was that it went flat quickly. May try again.

Pours a dark brown, with a tan coffee frappe type head. It smell of smoke and malt. Very dry and the taste of smoke overwhelms the flavor, sort of like Scotch. Not high on my Stout list.

Pretty boring stout. It was thin, didn’t have much flavor, and was pretty much nothing but roasty malt flavors, and that is really it. Same on the nose. Not exciting by any measure.

First time I tried Allagash Black was towards the end of a trade show, when I was good and professionally snockered. I loved it-- and learned beer goggles have the same effect on actual beer that they do on everything else. Not that Allagash Black is bad, just underwhelming for such a hefty price tag. The stout flavors are subdued, the beer tasting more Irish than Russian, yet the finish is a bitter slap of hops and alcohol. I know I sound bitchy, but beer this expensive should be more complex. Super dark mahogany brown bording on opaque with a thick brown head. Aroma is definitely belgian yeast - spicy, with some roasted dark grains, and licorice notes in the back. Flavor is a bit strange at first - almost like a clash of the flavors - roasted granis, astringency, sweet fruity phenols and a funky kind of dry finish. Interesting, but not hight on my list of must-have beers.

Draft at brewery, This is a hard beer to categorize, not really a stout but darn close. Roasty fragrance, light brown head, deep brown color. Nice beer, but nothing exceptional.

Dark ruby color, steady beige head. Fruity, maybe even a bit citrusy nose, weak aroma. Medium-bodied. Suprisingly flavor is quite different than aroma: mostly black coffee with light sweet-fruity hints. Palate is quite watery for this ABV.
