3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml. bottle from All Things Wine in Renton. This is batch #21, which I’m pretty happy about for no reason whatsoever. This is quite the effervescent beer; as is the case with most of the Foreign Stouts that I’ve consumed. Slightly off-white head, with a nearly opaque dark brown/light black body. A subtle roast aroma is prevalent. There is a soft yeast aroma, and an even softer hop aroma. Fairly nuanced aroma, but nothing here screams "exceptional" in any way. I’m hit with a blast of, unexpected, coffee. The roast is not astringent, but beautiful in the way it lingers. There is a subtle sweet yeast flavor that blends with a subtle chocolate flavor. The beer is quite fizzy, almost annoyingly so. The yeast is becoming more pungent as the beer warms up. Overall, we’ve got something pretty good here. There is a hint of cacao spiciness coming through at the end. I’ve got to say, it’s getting better as it warms up.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Very dark reddish brown color with a foamy tan head. Aroma of lots of cocoa and roast. Taste very roasty and cocoa-y as well, with an odd flavour that’s probably the Belgian yeast. Smokey finish with dry roastiness. Interesting.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
FROM NOTES: November 29, ’13 on draft into a snifter at the Black Friday event @ Kraftrwork, Philly.
A: Strong Belgian ale smell of dark fruit and spices with dark chocolate and cocoa notes lurking around.
A: Damn near pitch black with a couple fingers of tan head and very nice lacing.
T: The Belgian sweetness is noticeable but the chocolate flavor is the star of the show. Chocolate fades a little bit as it warms and some dark, fruity sweetness shows up.
P: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.
O: A rich and somewhat sweet Belgian with enough dark roasted grains to be a bit more stout than dark strong. TONS of flavor.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of roasted malt and cocoa. Taste is really smooth. Cocoa and some sweet to balance but not too sweet. Bit of a Belgian sweetness and Belgian yeast flavor addition to a stout. Very good.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz bottle from Brewmasters. Pours a black hue with zero visibility, mostly lasting fizzy caramel head. Malt, coffee, chocolate & alcohol on the nose. Bitter malt coffee up front with a short coffee finish. Oily on the palate.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from DrewFace. Pours black almost zero head. Aroma is roasted coffee with a bit of Belgium funk, maybe a bit if sweetness. Taste is pretty mild, probably because it is almost flat. Taste is a bit sweet, with some fruity esters from the yeast. Good, but way under carbonated.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep dark black color - no head with vigorous pour. Aroma is sweet, roasty, chocolately, dark fruit. Not as much roast in the flavor but still there, sweet, dark fruits, rich chocolate. Lacking carbonation.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Poured an opaque black with a hint of mahogany around the edges. Three-finger light tan foamy head that retained poorly and laced with curtains. Aroma is mild with hints of molasses and chocolate. Taste is very very sweet plus with roasted grain. Medium body. Smooth but very very sweet plus with a burnt bitter finish.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
I really liked this one. Pour black, but when held up to the light you see some light. Aroma of roasted grains, a little coffee and Belgium spices or the yeast strain. Tasted awesome, roasted grains, coffee, slight taste of chocolate and a taste of that distinctive Belgium flavor. It’s very drinkable even at 7.5% abv.
