Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

750 ml bottle from City Market in Burlington, VT (January 2008) served at cellar temperature from a Maudite glass. Smooth light tan medium-bubbled head fills over half the glass above the totally opaque ebody liquid dies fairly rapidly leaving little residue....light chocolaty, licorice-accented aroma, moderately roasty but mostly sweet, bready yeast character takes a little while to come out but adds some interest when it arrives....the body is at first sweet and lightly toasty, with full-on espresso bitterness arriving shortly, deeply and richly chocolaty with just a hint of dark grapes, rather burnt and perhaps a touch smoky at the finish....beautiful, typically Allagash silky mouthfeel despite the quite high carbonation, very light on the tongue given the potent flavor profile....excellent; were the nose more expressive it could be genius.

Bottle. Dad picked me up another one when he was in Maine, so I decided to go on and open my own bottle. Wow! Typical Allagsh here - no disappointments. I have been waiting for this day for years - my favoirte brewer to brew a stout. Pops off and instantly fills up the air with some coffee and chocolate smells. Smell also has plenty of roasted malts, and some sweet smells as well. Has that typical Allagash smell that seems to either be love or hate - pretty sure it is their yeast. The taste has that awesome signature Allagash flavor that I expect with every beer they brew. Full flavored, full bodied, roasted, full of chocolate, rich. Just an amazing foreign stout - the best I have ever had. An awesome stout for those people who are maybe still kind of shy of them. Fucking awesome beer! I could be partial since this is my favorite brewer..... but then again, maybe not.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a thin head that settled to a ring. Aroma of some sweet chocolate and roasted malt. The flavors were pretty similar with more light chocolate, roast, and a pleasant moderate malty sweetness. Smooth carbonation, medium body.

PIB, tap... Poured deep, dark brown with amber highlights and a thin, off-white head. Aroma of sweet chocolate. Flavors are pretty mellow, a chocolate emphasis and toasted malt. But not really above the bar like I’d expect from Allagash. Finishes with smoked malt.

Bottle. Pours opaque dark brown with a lasting light tan head. The aroma is kind of light. Roast, chocolate, all the usual suspects. All the flavors are pretty much balanced all the way though. A bit of roast, and a bit of chocolate, and a bit of char. Medium/light body with a pleasant amount of carbonation. Roasty dry finish. This is a fine beer, but not really as complex as the finer examples of a foreign stout.

Excellent beer. Wow am I glad I got to try this. $4.75 for a pint instead of $12 for a bottle, and at a bar too..I was surprised to say the least. The roast on this one is very light, and it tastes of fresh toffee and caramel instead of traditional burnt coffee and chocolate. Very welcoming ale that drinks like a potently flavorful low-alcohol because of how smooth it is. Toffee, dark and light, and heavy caramel are the extent of the complexity of this beer, but it was extremely enjoyable.
