Served on draft at Beer Run. Pours clear dark brown with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of honey, whisky and faint roast. The taste is whisky, bitter roasted notes, nuts, smoke. Medium bodied. Not very Belgian.

Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Dark brown appearance with a light brown head. Licorice, chocolate, Belgian yeasty, light bourbon aroma. Creamy, a bit boozy, sweet cany, caramel, Belgian yeasty, milk chocolate flavor with a warming, somewhat boozy finish.

Growler… Pours clear and very dark with a crimson shimmer and not much of a head. To me, the aroma smells of bourbon and wood – no more “Black” in here… all gone. Full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is all about alcohol heat and American oak with a smidge of vanilla. Finishes boozy and bourbony. The bourbon barrel treatment took away my Allagash Black and left me with something less. Not bad, but it’s not “Black.” Growler courtesy of ElliesBrown!

On tap at Capones. Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white/tan head. Aromas of roastiness, woody, smoke, vanilla, and a trace (if any) of bourbon. Tastes of vanilla, woody/oak, dark fruits, roasty, chocolate, the same smokiness, and vanilla. If I wasn’t told this was done in a Bourbon Barrel, I would have just guessed Oak Aged.

On tap at Paradiso. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Little lace. Aroma is whiskey, chocolate ganache, Godiva liquor, light cayenne pepper. Very oily palate. Lots of rich vanilla and some cognac showing through in the taste as well as some light flemish sour notes, vinegar, sherry. Some sticky sweetness in the finish. Yum.

Deep black pour. The aroma is quite herbal with a lot of vanilla/caramel bourbon aroma. Intensely bourbony behind some sweet black licorice, rich sweet malt and more bourbony character as well. All of the yeast contribution to this brew seems to have been beaten out of it. Rich cocoa and bourbon. I like it actually - but it’s definitely unsubtle.

Pour on tap at Avery Strong Ale 2012, dark brownish black with thin tan head, aroma brought nasty notes of cabbage, green bean, mineral and some rotten fruits, some slight vanilla maybe but the smell is awful. Taste however is completely different, nice roasted and ester notes, hints of vanilla and slight bourbon into a dark fruit middle, slight chocolate and espresso goes into a roasted finish. Interesting how different the aroma and taste were.

2013-04-26. Black body with a nice tan head. 4+ Bourbony aroma, light woody notes, dry roasty malt notes, sweet vanilla. Flavour is similar, strong bourbon overtones, fairly bitter, some green hops in the background? Notes if licorice in the finish? Very smooth medium bodied palate has pleasant carbonation. Decent but don’t think the BA helped it much.On tap at Three Penny Taproom, Montpelier

Draft at Craft. Pours dark brownish black with 1-finger tan head that dissipates quickly. Nose is a complex and luscious medley of huge oaky bourbon, dark patent malt, molasses, prunes. Medium palate heft, lightly carbonated in the flavor, with dark malt, big oaky bourbon, vanilla, fig, prune, molasses, and dark choc. The palate is a tad light, not unexpected for this style. Delicious.
