Cloudy straw pour with a huge white head that will not die down. It’s like whipped cream on top of my beer, and coats the glass like paint, or frosting. Or something that is sticky sweet. Smells like a tripel with a hint of bourbon in there. Bit of a pepper aroma and alcohol mixed in. Tastes of bourbon up from with a nice tripel underneath. I think this would be a fine beer even if it wasn’t aged in bourbon barrels. Nice sweet mouthfeel with just a slight burn from the alcohol. Nicely balanced beer.

aroma and color are fairly typical of a tripel, but thats where the similarities end, the taste is more full than most tripels, and the overall body feels more complex. the tight carbonation reminds me of a champagne, phenominal beer, even if its way expensive.

Pours copper with very little off-white head. Smells like lots of bourbon up front. Hot. Nearly antiseptic with peppermint, caramel, bourbon, and oak. Belgian yeast esters of banana and apple smooth out the somewhat abrasive nose. Nice, but could dial back the bourbon a bit.

750ml bottle, cask 653 november 2009. Hazy, partly cloudy, no head and light lacing. Not much aroma, spicy, citrus, almost like a wheat beer. great mouthfeel, incredibly sweet, some carbonation, some bitterness on the palate. Very creamy, silky, and delicious. Although not that special at the beginning its very tasty the rest of the way. Will need to get some more.

The Big Hunt, DC tap ($8): Pours a cloudy yellow with a white head. Aroma is a crazy mix of a tripel and whiskey and wood. So there are the fruit flavors really taking second whistle to the oak-aged aspects (in my opinion). This is a unique combination for a beer and I am not positive that it works that well. I’ve had other oak-aged beers and they are generally of the darker variety. I must say that some of those I think are hard to drink because of the whiskey flavors, whereas this one is somewhat more manageable. You get the fruit and the yeast here, but for me its mostly an exercise in oaking. There is a synthesis, but I don’t think I would want to drink it again, even if I enjoyed it the first time around.

Serving: 750 ml. bottle from a friend.
The nose is musty with a good bit of oak and a touch of bourbon. The color is dark gold with a frothy, white head. The flavor is musty with a touch of bourbon, paper, and alcohol. A Belgian with a bourbon finish. Medium bodied with higher than average carbonation leading to a bourbon barrel finish. An interesting mix but not one I am sure I am a fan of.

Belgian Trippel style. This is probably the most complex beer I have ever tasted. Caramels, vanilla, tobacco, crazy fruity undertones that I can’t even identify... and then the finish leaves a nice aged Bourbon taste in your mouth. This stuff is rather strong too, so it has a nice warming effect. One of my all time favorites.

Reviewed from notes. Pours a lift caramel color that is somewhat opaque. Nose brings forward a god dose of light bourbon along with some caramel sweetness and bread. Sligt spicing. The taste just doesn’t really work for me, with some strange bread and banana interacting with the bourbon. It sounds good, but just isn’t very appetizig to me. Mouthfeel is a bit boozy and thin. This one just did not work for me. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-07-2010
