obguthr (987), Poquoson, Virginia, USA Oct 20, 2007 Weak grapefruit, apple core, and smoke aroma. Hazy tea colored, with a thin head. It tastes of horehound and dates with a light woodiness. The finish is vinous and leaves raisin and cumquat on the palate. Hops are detected at times but are subdued by other more powerful flavors. Nice mouthfeel. Fairly well done for fans of the style, but I don’t care for it. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 20, 2007 750 mL bottle, batch 65 - pours dark brown with quickly fading white head; aromas of malts and slight hint of chocolate; flavors are dry and fall a little flat as i i found this a little disappointing tronraner (1906), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Oct 15, 2007 750 mL bottle shared by NachlamSie. Pours cloudy brown with nice ivory head. The aroma is clovey with general yeastiness and some light chocolatey sweet notes. The flavor is clove and chocolate up front, with just a faint bit of banana afterwards. Some zest notes in the middle give it a surprising zing, then it finishes with mellow caramel, wood, and bread. Pretty tasty. NachlamSie (1631), Tennessee, USA Oct 15, 2007 Bottle, batch # 62 split with Tronraner. Pours a dark red-brown with a tall head. The nose has some satisfying Belgian scents with suggestions of cloves, ripened fruits, and some floral tones. The flavor has a delightful hint at chocolate with delicate fruitiness and mild spices. This is a very drinkable beer with respectable nuances, but a little thinner and tamer than I’d really like a Belgian style to be. I still enjoy their Triple the most. Mutualaid (136), Texas, USA Oct 12, 2007 Pours deep ruby colored with a thinner white head. Faint aromas of fruitcake, and wood. Very dry for a Dubbel. Full body, astringent finish. Not bad, but no Westmalle. RSRIZZO (1346), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Oct 11, 2007 Aroma is a mild malt scent with faint yeast tones. Color is a solid brown with good carbonation a a thick tight head. Taste is malty. Starting with a medium body it goes down crisp. Finish comes on with a bold malt flavor that has some roasted tones and then an easy bitterness. In the after taste there is just a faint hint of yeast. Its not a bad beer but it has no Belgian characteristics at all. Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA Oct 11, 2007 25.4 oz bottle courtesy of RSRIZZO-A cloudy dark amber body with a decent head that dissipated slowly into a covering of the beer. A faint aroma of malt and yeast. Taste of slight malt that builds up into more and more malt. Tastes more of an amber beer than a dubbel. I am getting no characteristics of a belgian beer. A little disappointed with this offering from Allagash. I was expecting more. TheJester (694), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Oct 8, 2007 750 mL bottle. Translucent orange-brown with a decent light beige head. The aroma is mild, distinctly Belgian, and is dominated by caramel and fruity yeast. The taste is caramel-malty with dark fruit and candi sugar. The finish is slightly bitter. Medium body, medium carbonation. Average; there are better examples of the style.
