mansquito (819), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Oct 7, 2007 Pours a thick beige head that stays and leaves realy sweet lacing. Dark brown colour to the actual beer itself. Bittersweet candyesque aroma. Definate hoppy undertones. Tastes like dark chocolate and what not. Lovely dark and deep. Tastes almost like a porter in a lot of ways rather than like a dubbel. Goblincat (356), Westland, Michigan, USA Sep 28, 2007 Pours a deep brownish-red. The aroma is a caramel, malt, apple, and some spice. The taste is an interesting light sweetness that fades to a light nutty bitter. Each sip seems to dry out and fade away quickly in the mouth. It’s pretty neat that way. PilsnerPeter (2598), Flushing, New York, USA Sep 27, 2007 Tap at Barcade: Pours a murky brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is predominately figs, along with raisins in the background. Crisp carbonation on the palate. There’s a nice Belgian malt character overall. It also has a delicate fruitiness of dates, figs, and a mild spiciness of cinnamon towards the finish. Mild, and very Belgian feeling. bhensonb (4189), Woodland, California, USA Sep 24, 2007 750 ml. bottle; Batch# 60. Aroma of dark fruits backed by chocolate and dark malt. Very hazy amber/ripe apricot flesh color. A beige head rapidly ringed. Thinnish in body with a bit of fizzy carbonation. The flavor is dark caramel, a bit of raisin, something like coffee. It starts a bit sweet, but goes dry rather quickly. The finish is astringent with slight bitter or nuts; finally some chocolate is discernible. The characteristics vary as the ale warms. dupee419 (3), Burlington, Vermont, USA does not count Sep 23, 2007 caramel, bread, butterscotch, vanilla, amber, clear, a minimal head, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, full body, soft carbonation, long finish. jtw (942), farmington, Michigan, USA Sep 20, 2007 12 oz bottle. roughly the color of cherrywood but a bit clearer. thin offwhite head lingers above but the majority of the bubbles dissipate relatively quickly. lightly alcoholic reminiscent of red wine, with toasted and spiced grains and a little nutty. feels flat (not in carbonation but depth) - rather like the product of malt, hops, and yeast. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Sep 19, 2007 A murky bronzed orange hue. Metals and cheap chocolate on the nose. Clean. Hints of banana and cinnamon, distantly. Crisp and minty flavor of very light malts and quiet yeast. Mildly reminiscent of a date, fig and pecan trail mix with a quick temporanillo soak. Copper and pears press with a slow, persistent gravity. Finishes with a tinny canned pineapple sweetness, and minerals. Palate is slightly thin and short on malt strength. Smack of plain sugar and honey. Consistent, and boring. mvcramer (229), Arlington, Massachusetts, USA Sep 15, 2007 12oz bottle. Another nice brew from Allagash. Pours a beautiful chocolate brown with a nice off-white/tan head. I got strong notes of dried fruit (raisin and perhaps dates). Strong coffee and toffee flavors. The coffee may have been just a touch overdone, but it mellowed a bit as the beer warmed up. A nice malty offering. Recommended highly. I have a world of respect for the Allagash family of beers and this did nothing to change that opinion.
