papajohn (1054), San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA Jul 16, 2007 Updated: Jul 17, 2007750 ml bottle from MCAS Miramar Marine Mart: Pours a murky prune juice brown with a medium, but fading beige head. Aroma is spicy and wine like with dark fruit. Flavor starts spicy and fruity with raisin and plum finishing lightly sweet with a mild bitterness. Medium bodied and creamy with moderate carbonation. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Jul 14, 2007 Pours a deep walnut brown with a one finger off-white head that fades slowly to a thin cap. The lacing is thick, almost completely covering the inside on the glass.
Smell; sweet almost sugary, with lots of dark fruits. Raisins, plums and dates are all present as well as some roasted earthy notes.
Taste; as with the nose the flavor starts out sweet with brown sugar, and little chocolate. Raisins, plums and dates give this the fruitiness you would expect with a double, and the finish is a touch on the earthy side. Not the best double out there, but pretty darn respectable.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a nice smooth carbonation, and the drinkability is good. keepersj12 (774), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA Jul 13, 2007 Looks good, tastes good. Malty and sweet. Nice dry finish. Nice little brewery up there. Assez bien! bridgetek (9), Pennsylvania, USA does not count Jul 7, 2007 Dark brown color with tan head. Slightly spicy aroma. Malty taste has hints of molasses and caramel. Medium carbonation and dry finish. Seemed a little thin, but overall fairly enjoyable. RiverHorse (454), New Jersey, USA Jun 30, 2007 12 oz. bottle, aged one year. Pours a dark ruby color with with a very small light tan head. There was a very small amount of sediment floating in the beer. The lacing was minimal on the sides of the chalice. The scent was of malt, brown sugar, figs and some molasses. The taste woke up the sweet part of the taste buds, with some hints of berry, fruit and malt played around. There was a dry finish, with a small amount of bitterness and sweetness alternating on the palate. bbp182 (255), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 27, 2007 Updated: May 3, 2008Malty taste, pretty good. Amber color. light/medium body. Not a bad Dubbel BigBeer45 (676), Troy, Michigan, USA Jun 26, 2007 12oz. Bottle: Pours a dark ruby with brown around the edges, lots of floaties in this brew, off-white and tan bubbles emerge that stay there til the end, aroma of dark malt, brown sugar, nuts, dark fruit, faint yeast, vanilla and chocolate fragrances, a sip brings a taste of dark malt, light berry and fruit, bread, some brown sugar-molasses flavors, faint spiciness, medium bubbly on the palate, some hop bitterness, a touch of alcohol creeps up as this brew warms but nothing that distracts from enjoying, a medium dry finish with a lingering sweetness, not bad, I thought it could use more flavor.
