Saarlander (1577), Saarlouis, Germany Oct 3, 2005 The sample I had was sooooo mellow, no hint of alcohol, sweet, malty, good after a big meal. jjpm sent me this chocolaty one, and I thank him! wnhay (722), Princeton, New Jersey, USA Sep 22, 2005 750 ML bottle. Poured brown with a thick tan head. Too foamy in my opinion. Coffee, berries, toffee and caramel made up the aroma. Taste was very similar to Ommegang. It got too bitter as it went down. Toffee, chocolate and coffee made up the taste. Good brew but comes up a bit short in my opinion. ehhdayton (1113), USA Sep 21, 2005 Allagash Dubbel Reserve has a malty aroma and the color is a deep amber. There is a malty sweetness with a roasted finish. The aftertaste continues to build as the roastedness becomes more pronounced. BungTapper96 (4), Ft. Worth, Texas, USA does not count Sep 19, 2005 From Batch # 48...A distinct earthy nose and a dark amber colour when held to light. A most pronounced coffee flavor. followed by suptle hints of cassis berry, sour black cherries and bitter sweet chocolate. finishes with a nice hop bite. this beer rates low because it is unintentionally complex. however, i would give strong marks for any brewery making such a worthwhile attempt at this belgian style. 1FastSTi (2551), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Sep 16, 2005 Thanks Matt! Pours to a creamy/foamy light beige head atop a hazy dark mahogany body. The aroma is malty and similar to iced tea. It has some Belgian yeasts and a good semi-sweet milk chocolate and light coffee. The flavor is iced tea, semi-sweet chocolate. The palate is medium-full bodied and matches well with this beer. I like this... MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Sep 15, 2005 mahogony color w/ a tall thick white head and a nice lace. Smells is very light some carmel malt and light fruits w/ some nuts and yeast. Palate is fairly light body mildly carbonated. Reminds me of a belgian mixed w/ a stout. Hints of nuts, some roasted malts and yeasts. Very odd, ok but overrated.
Thanks to matt for sharing. VTHopHead (895), Barre, Vermont, USA Sep 15, 2005 750ML - Poured a quite dark black/brown with a hefty light tan head and with some decent lacing. Aroma is nutlike and heavy with malt and a trace of spicy hops. Some toffee/caramel too. Flavor is more than slightly sweet and quite malty. Hop flavor only apparent as an underlying bitterness that fails to balance the sweet malt. Lots of toffee/caramel with some hint of dark fruit and maybe some chocolate. Lacks the classic Belgian yeast flavor. Finishes clean with some lingering sweetness. Very good... jimmack (1221), Nutley, New Jersey, USA Sep 11, 2005 750ml. bottle. Dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. Nutty, malty aroma with some dark fruits and caramel. Lightly sweet malt flavor with some dark fruits, dark chocolate and spices. Much better than their regular dubbel. Earlier Rating: 9/2/2005 Total Score: 3.5 12oz. bottle. Dark brown color with a small light tan head. Malty, slightly smoky aroma with some cloves and yeast. Reminds me of a wheat doppelbock, sort of. Flavor was similar to the aroma; malt, cloves, yeast. Dry finish.
