porterdude (170), Bellingham, Washington, USA Aug 25, 2005 Bottle, batch 50. A chocolate or cola colored beer. Smells of cherries, dates, spices and candi sugar. Some cherry flavor, with nice hints of spices, and i thought i detected a bit of corriander but i am probably mistaken. A really sweet mouthfeel, but also a refreshing beer. duff (5474), Surrey, Greater London, England Aug 25, 2005 Updated: Sep 2, 2005Bottle. Nice stuff and quite authentic. Perhaps a bit more chocolatey than your normal dubbel. Some light caramel/candy sugar and some cassis flavours also come out. Tasty stuff to be sure, a nice dubbel. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 23, 2005 Pour is brown cola-ish look with a thin but lasting skin of tan head...smell indeed has some root beer, vanilla, allspice, yeast, chocolate...taste is a little weak...some chocolate, yeast, sweet nuts...nicely done, but a little weak...so maybe not nicely done...but I think in the next couple of weeks a rerate of the reserve might be in order... Earlier Rating: 11/9/2004 Total Score: 3.4 Poured brown with huge quick fading tan head...smell is sweet and fruity...taste is earth fruits and very sweet...too thin bodied...a little watery...not impressed... jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Aug 22, 2005 12 oz bottle pours a creamy tan head, color is dark brown/black. Taste is nutty, chocolate malt. Nice. willblake (2160), Belcamp, Maryland, USA Aug 19, 2005 08.18.05 12oz bottle labeled Dubbel Ale not Double Ale, but the description matches so I guess this is it. Mostly clear, dark, beer-bottle brown pour with settling precipitates on bottom and a creamy tan foam on top. Aroma is ripe with plums and prunes, canteloupe, root beer, anise, and very Belgian yeasty. Luscious and thick, spicey and sweet, this stuff is as complex as advertised...but is it complex only for the sake of being complex? It seems a forced complexity at times, a sort of undue predictability; but then other sips explode with a blunderbuss blast of flowers, spice, overripe fruits, concorde grape, chocolate chip cookie, and a dozen other flavors. Given its depth, there is a lingering spicy bitterness that is mostly a distraction and detracts from the overall. JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Aug 18, 2005 Cloudy, deep brown color with medium-sized, thick tan head. Aroma has caramel, toffee, belgain aromatics and spice. Flavor is smooth and malty, chewy malts, toffee and hints of coffee. A nice, dangerously drinkable dubbel. CapFlu (3480), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Aug 15, 2005 (Draught) Sampled on tap at the Great Lost Bear in Portland, ME. Very reddish with dissipating white head. Nose of caramel, butter and hops. A tad thin. The hops showed through in an evenly matched battle with malt. Good! Earlier Rating: 8/11/2003 Total Score: 3.5 (Bottle) Tart nose, somewhat spicy. Orange body with a lasting white head. Sweet flavour with a very dry finish. Good. axilla (962), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2005 Batch#41. Pours a dark red/brown color body with a darker tan head. Fruity aroma with a little chocolate and yeast present. Flavors are dark berries, chocolate, molasses, and belgian yeast. A pretty tasty dubbel. Earlier Rating: 2/26/2004 Total Score: 3.5 cloudy medium browm color with rocky off-white head that is gone in a flash. Major raisin taste and aroma with hints of roasted malts. Just a little hop bite in the begining. Not as much of a yeasty taste as I expected. Pretty good.
