puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Aug 6, 2005 Dissappointing dubbel. Pours a deep amber with a millimeter of head. Aroma is a bit roasty, some hops, but already smelling a little watery. In the mouth this thing is way too watery (especially for a dubbel), though has a very interesting velvety finish... kind of tingely in the mouth. Taste is very roasty, coffeeish, and certainly not bad, but this beer could use some work. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Aug 4, 2005 Updated: Sep 20, 2005750-ml. bottle, Allagash Dubbel Reserve, rated 8-4-2005. Total score: 3.0 Light mahogany in color with a wispy grey head at first pour. Aroma is sherry, port, anise and crystallized brown sugar, seeming eerily sweet and questionable. Flavor is newly harvested dirty nuts. Dry with a metallic tinge. Chocolate powder and English toffee characteristics to impart some abbey dubbel traits. Something seems inapt, and it’s fairly light for a dubbel. Finishes with earthen tobacco.
12-oz. bottle, Allagash Double, rated 5-25-2005. Total Score: 3.3 Done back to back with Allagash White. Cloudy ruby brown in color with a fizzy, foamy, shallow grey head. Aroma is banana bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, cocoa powder and s’mores. Flavor hits early on the malt complexity - principally toasted and chocolate malts. There’s a campfire essence to this one. Leather like roughness and tobacco leaves create a rustic bitterness. Caramel cola sweetness. Body is initially thin, but then the malts slide into sequence to make it slightly less delicate. Malts and carbonation dominate early on. After the fizz died down, this one improved. Finish is like pipe smoke. Thanks for the bottle, tpkenned! blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 2, 2005 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev -- courtesy of GregClow. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of light hops, sweet malt, spices and a touch of chocolate -- smells nice. The flavour is similar to the aroma but it was a dissapointment, it’s just too mild -- for goodness sake bring the taste out! This could’ve been really good but it’s just too subtle, as it is it’s just O.K. GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 30, 2005 Bottle from Premier shared with blankboy, HogTownHarry, jerc & tupalev - courtesy of rudolf. Murky burgundy colour with small head. Nice aroma - notes of wine, malt, chocolate and wood. Flavour was milder than I expected from the great intro provided by the aroma - hints of malt, chocolate, dark cherry, but all very muted and bland. Somewhat disappointing. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 29, 2005 Bottle, thanks Greg. Dark brown, small tan head. Sweet malt aroma with a hint of spice. Slightly watery mouthfeel. Nice balanced malt taste, but bland. Not really any mention of the alcohol. Ok, just not much here, which makes it a disappointment. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Jul 29, 2005 Updated: Jan 3, 2006Bottle (750ml) - shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc at tupalev’s domicile - provided by GregClow. Poured a clear dark amber, small off-white head. Aroma of chocolate, spices, damp wood, some sweet dark malts & mild hops, a hint of licorice. Taste was quite bitter and grainy wth some fruity slightly spicy malt - I found it surprising and somewhat harsh. It had a flat and astringent mouthfeel and too much of a bitter linger. Sad - I was expecting quite a bit from this one after the pour. 3daddict (139), Portland, Maine, USA Jul 29, 2005 Updated: Sep 20, 2005Dark reddish brown pour with frothy head and lacing. Good Belgium spice thing going on in aroma. Brown sugar and raisin flavor with a tight finish. I’m fortunate to have this beer so readily available to me here. Allagash can brew some damn delightful beers! stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 25, 2005 poured dark with a thick tannish off white head, aroma was of yeast and fruit nothing exciting yet, but the taste was excellent, fruit, spices, sweetness, smoothness, just plain good, decent body, a very drinkable beer.
