Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jul 5, 2005 Bottle courtesy of Pailhead. Pours medium brown with little head. Fruity yeasty aroma, with some sweetness that reminds me of a doppel. Flavor has a strange funk to it. Sort of acedic and sour, huge turn off. Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Jul 2, 2005 Pours out a dark red almost borwn color with a thin off white lacing. Smells of apples, cherries, bananas and grapes. Taste is nutty with some nice caramel and brown sugar elements. Finish is spicey. Alcohol is not noticeable at all. This is a fantastic beer! Earlier Rating: 7/1/2005 Total Score: 4.4 Batch 40. Pours out brownish read and viscous with a nice tan head that dissipates. Smells of fruit and cherried with small hints of figs. Taste is nutty with a nice warming raisin finish. The alcohol is masked very well on this one. wxman (582), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Jun 30, 2005 it’s hoppy, has a delicious roasted malt flavor, and a beautiful brownish-red color. In every respect a very good beer - - but it’s not a Belgian Dubbel. This is a terrific bock beer in flavor. There are some slight fruity ale yeast characteristics to it, but in my view it’s a bock. reapermedic (18), USA Jun 23, 2005 This is an interesting appearing beer. The color is a deep amber, and is clowdy enough to make it interesting. The aroma is a very nice sweet/malty mix. Ths first taste is a bit bitter, but has a nice full body. The after taste however is kind of sour. roder60 (1019), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 20, 2005 Poured a dark burgundy color with a quickly dissapating white head. Aroma is malty sweetness with yeasty fruit undertones which I found nicely balanced. Flavor is overly yeasty and sickly sweet. Overall, it looks and smells nice enough but the flavor seems to me to be way off. DYCSoccer17 (2187), Davis, California, USA Jun 20, 2005 Bottle. Batch #46...wish I knew how old that made this...Aroma is very interesting with some sour dried fruits, malasses, hints of chocolate as well as a bit of smoke. Moderately transparent mahogany body with a tan head. Starts off sweetish turning raisiny with dried fruits and yeasts. Later this turns a bit roastier and more coffee/chocolate like, with spritzy finish. Damn, this is REAL good. Earlier Rating: 9/17/2003 Total Score: 3.1 Pours a slightly hazy mahogany with a mild white head that quickly disappears. Aroma is of some mild yeast and maybe some fruit? rasins? Start is somewhat almost fruity/malty with a little chocolate flavor in there. I believe this is out of style. Beer is very smooth and non-carbonated. This one is a real head-scratcher. Tippie4 (97), Auburn, Maine, USA Jun 20, 2005 . . . 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA Jun 20, 2005 Bottle (Batch #50): Burnt Caramel, quite brownish, thick/hazy, large foamy off-white head, sticky lacing.   Strong bready nose, hints of dark malts, subtle dark fruits, very subtle.   Bready, malty, and quite dry.   Dark fruity flavors are apparent, but again they are very subtle.   Full bodied, moderate mouthfeel.   Dry finish, somewhat sweet, bready, with hints at a dark malt base.   Interesting, good, but not as fruity as I would have liked.
Earlier Rating: 2/22/2004 Total Score: 3 Bottle pours a ruby brown with dishwater like head. Aroma is of belgian yeast and fruits, also some figs and caramel. Flavor exudes some earthy notes, as well as some yeasty tones. Mouthfeel is thin for a double. Finish is somewhat flat, slight raisin flavor. As compared to other Allagash offerings, this one doesn't do much for me. Thanks goes out to raindog for the trade!
