<b>750-ml. bottle, Allagash Dubbel Reserve, rated 8-4-2005. Total score: 3.0</b><br />Light mahogany in color with a wispy grey head at first pour. Aroma is sherry, port, anise and crystallized brown sugar, seeming eerily sweet and questionable. Flavor is newly harvested dirty nuts. Dry with a metallic tinge. Chocolate powder and English toffee characteristics to impart some abbey dubbel traits. Something seems inapt, and it’s fairly light for a dubbel. Finishes with earthen tobacco.<br /><br /><b>12-oz. bottle, Allagash Double, rated 5-25-2005. Total Score: 3.3</b><br />Done back to back with Allagash White. Cloudy ruby brown in color with a fizzy, foamy, shallow grey head. Aroma is banana bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, cocoa powder and s’mores. Flavor hits early on the malt complexity - principally toasted and chocolate malts. There’s a campfire essence to this one. Leather like roughness and tobacco leaves create a rustic bitterness. Caramel cola sweetness. Body is initially thin, but then the malts slide into sequence to make it slightly less delicate. Malts and carbonation dominate early on. After the fizz died down, this one improved. Finish is like pipe smoke. Thanks for the bottle, tpkenned!

Nov 30, 2008 Appearance: Murky ruby brown, small head. Aroma: Smoke and malt, some tiny amount of hops detected too. Flavour: Bitter with malt, peppers and dark fruit. Quite a dry finish

Pours a thick, lasting, tan head of good duration, some minimal lacing....over a dark coppery brown body....nose of malts in multiple layers with some hop spice, bit of cherry, not sweet.... taste is initially rather light, then sweet malts, with some further fruits, raisin and cherry, finishes with lingering hop bitterness....mouth feel is a little lighter than expected. 11/26/2008

Nov 21, 2008 Brown pour. Small tan head. Aroma is chocolate, cherries, some toffee and yeast. Flavor is sweetish, honey, yeast and some sweet malt. Nice beer from USA.

Nov 20, 2008 Poured into Chimay chalice. Pours a dark, cloudy amber with a small but long-lasting head. Aroma is milk chocolate, dark fruits (black cherries), yeast. Initial taste is a bit watery and bland but then turns more refined. Lots of malt and brown sugar and good balancing hops. Yeast is not too prevalent unlike abbey dubbels. Aftertaste is dry and long-lasting but pleasant. Lacing is most excellent.

Oct 28, 2008 Bomber. Pours a crimson brown with a large creamy head. Aroma of soft malt, caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is soft and well blended, and there is a surprisingly nice touch of hops in there for complexity. As is Allagash’s trademark style, this brew is subtle, soft, and tremendously drinkable. It is clearly the blend of a true brewmaster.
