Bottle from State Line. Turbid dull orangy pour with 3-fingers of fluffy off-white head. Aroma was citric and tropical fruity, with prominent malt, hops, funky old yeast, and florals. Tasted citric, spicy, with floral and hop notes matched by fruity and funky wet basement yeasty notes.

750mL bottle, courtesy of Stine. Thanks, Eben! Pours a murky, yellowish-brown color; minimal off-white head. Medium, mineral and herbal hops in the aroma; some belgian sugars; slightly muddled. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy Belgian sugars and slightly alcoholic upfront; some odd spices and stalky vegetal character; pine and herbal hops are present but don’t do much to bring this around to anything good; too much alcohol. Lengthy, Belgian sugar and spices in the finish; ends a bit sticky.

(10/18/07, 750ml bottle, thanks stine) Small beige head atop hazy golden body. Aroma is medium sweet, herbal, light grapefruit, some alcohol. Taste is medium sweet, herbal/straw, lemon/grapefruit, some alcohol. Fairly dry finish. Medium body.

750ml shared by Stine. Pours completely opaque with a light yellow corn meal colored body with a purely white head. Spicy nose of clove, white grapes, yogurt, corn starch and tortillas, with moderate hop presence, light pungency and light fruity orange yeast esters. Smells decent enough but the hops tend to mask the spices a little too much. Flavorwise the hops aren’t really present, at least not the bittering hops. There’s some smooth hay and straw notes, some weird, pasty, starchy and husky grains and corn, with, again, light spices and a moderate presence of muddy yeast. Overall it’s decent enough, but it’s not really anything special, and for Allagash it’s below average.

Poured from a 750. Cloudy, dank yellow pour. Old pineapple juice, cinnamon, and anise on the nose; hints of bubblegum, banana, and clove in a wheaty essence. Alcohol powers through and translates itself brusquely to the taste; heavy, boozy. Spiced golden flavors of honey, flowers (yarrow?), and bland coastline scotch. Smooth and thick palate, finishing with simple heat. Boring and banal, with distant ugliness.

Samples from two 750’s purchased from the brewery. very hazy light amber/dark golden in color, somewhat resembles a light colored apple cider. Medium lasting head. Aroma- alot of yarrow, which I’ve never had in food (to my knowledge) but reminds me a bit of a mild ginger. Also get alot of belgian yeast, mild banana and citrus, and light phenolics in the nose. Taste is yarrow with pale malts and some rye, moderately yeasty with must and moderate spicy phenols. Some honey sweetness near the finish. Medium to full body with some alcohol apparent, but not over the top. At first the yarrow seems to dominate but then becomes more in check as the beer warms. Overall I liked it, definitely weird and unique- but this one worked for me more than some of the other Allagash special releases. Thanks D.O.B for hooking me up with this.
