4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Boutip (3451) - Gatineau, - JUN 25, 2010
Bottle: Poured a bright hazy orangey color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some pretty good lacing. Aroma of rustic ester with some great notes of spices and some sweet undertones. Taste is a great mix between some Belgian-style malt with residual sweetness, some rustic notes and a light peppery yeast. Body is quite full with limited filtration and good bottle-conditioning with great carbonation and no signs of alcohol. Very well brewed, easily drinkable with loads of complexity though no yam could be detected.

750 mL bottle, last one finally! Pour is clear orange, nice big fluffy white head, laces super well. Aroma brings notes of sweet pear, apricot, hints of white grape and maybe a hint of the sweet potato, some nice spicy pepper and yeasty bready malts, some slight lemon notes in there with a hint of cracker and slight earth. Very nice and layered! Nice full mouthfeel, and the taste is a whole other story. Nice sweet fruits with pear and white grape notes, nice big sweet potato notes go into some slightly tart lemon notes, a nice dry earthy funk in there as well, with a bit of a sweet buttery cracker finish. Very tasty and unique, by far my favorite of the series.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of Glouglouburp. Huge thanks Dany! I’ve been dying to try this again since I last had it two years ago. Moderately cloudy orange appearance with a moderately sized cream colored head and some sediment deposited at the bottom of the glass. Sweet orange citrusy, Belgian yeasty, somewhat peppery, tangerine, wheat malty aroma. Somewhat black peppery, orange-tangerine citrusy, tangy, Belgian yeasty, sweet malty flavor. Good carbonation. I wouldn’t have guessed this has yams but I can taste them now that it’s mentioned. Slightly tangy, orange citrusy, spicy, Belgian yeasty aftertaste. I fucking love Allagash. Cracked open for my 2500th rating.

750 ml. Bottle. Orangish/amber color, thick white head. Refreshing Belgian saison. You just have to wait for that thick head to go down to enjoy.

Bottle. Pretty disappointing. Pours orange with a white head. Mostly sweet with some spice and pepper. Just a hint of the sweet potato. Basically just a middle of the road saison.
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 4/20 oobawa (578) - South Carolina, USA - JUN 4, 2011
Very fancy-sounding beer with a rather lame taste. Okay, not lame, but not what I was hoping for after paying $20 for a sweet-potato/pepper saison. The sweet potato is a non-factor, in fact, and the flavor of the pepper is easy to confuse with the usual spiciness of a Saison. Looks beautiful, but I don’t drink the looks, and, while the texture is well done, this beer leaves me more annoyed than satisfied. (9/10)

750 ml bottle from michael-pollack- thanks again, Pollack! Be careful opening this. I had untwisted the cage just a little and the cork shot out like a bullet and just as loud. Pours a cloudy gold color with visible sediment and a big foamy head. The aroma starts with black pepper and yeast, followed by apples, sweet potato, pale malts, straw, and some floral notes. Flavor of black pepper, sweet potato, sweet malts, farmhouse funk, and honey. The black pepper is really big in this and lingers long after the finish. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry, spicy mouthfeel. Such an unusual beer. I really liked drinking it but couldn’t drink a whole lot.

This was a little disapointing. A light spiciness, quite sweet, but alot of bready malts. no funk, or sourness to speak of, it was really like a sweet amber ale, with a very light touch of spice. pretty ordinary.
