COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Allagash Fluxus is a beer of continuous change. Brewed differently every year to commemorate our anniversary, this year’s Fluxus is a huge Imperial Chocolate Stout. Weighing in at 10.3% ABV, it is one of the strongest beers that Allagash has ever brewed. The brain child of brewer Doug Klippenstein, this beer utilized a unique brewing process that used wort from a smaller brew, as the “water” for mashing the grain for this brew. Maine-grown barley was used as the base for this grain bill that also included a blend of three roasted malts and oats. Fluxus was appropriately hopped with both US Saaz and Glacier hops. Just before knock out, fifty pounds of Taza roasted Cacao nibs were added to the whirlpool. The result is a thick, sticky stout with tons of both roasted and chocolate flavors, aromas of tobacco and cocoa, and a surprisingly sweet, creamy finish.

As part of our Tribute Series, Allagash proudly donates $1 per bottle sold to the Allagash Pediatric Nurses Scholarship at the Maine Medical Center. This scholarship directly supports the training of nurses in the field of pediatrics.

My Bottom Line :
Vegetal notes (from the cocoa?) mar this Imperial Stout’s roasted malts and marzipan allusions, as fruity edges are met by an overtly phenolic finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A generous head of foam decorates the darkness.
-The roasted malt bitterness and cocoa are not gelling, imho.
-The perceived iodine-like phenols might be from peated smoke... I hope so, anyway.
-The soft carbonation makes its flaws more apparent

Bottle.

750 ml bottle shared by pineypower on what we can easily say was not one of my better rating days, 28 hours of no sleep and then rating does not bode well. Thanks and sorry again Dean. From whatmy notes tell me I liked this beer. Poured a solid black body with a thick full frothy beige head. Aroma of chocolate, cola, vanilla. Full bodied that finished both silky and milky. Flavors of chocolate pudding, tobacco, vanilla, dark roasted malts. Nicely done.

Bottle, that I wish I could find another of. Pours black with a nice beige head. Aroma is of heavy chocolate, roast, dark fruits and light alcohol. Taste is very complex, with a thick yet smooth mouthfeel. Lots of chocolate, roast, some earth, light smoke, and some slightly fruity notes show up in there also with only a small hint of the ABV. Thick, warming and rich. Well done.

GABF 2010. Pours darkest brown in color with a substantial tan head sitting on top, and good lacing. The aroma is really excellent, rather intense yet balanced, with chocolate, roast, tobacco, sweet toffee, and floral hops. The flavor has sweet toffee as well as chocolate malts, earthiness, roast, coffee, chocolate, a little rubberiness, and more hops than average for the style. Smooth and full-bodied with soft carbonation. Not too syrupy as some imperial stouts can be. A very solid beer overall. Hopefully I’ll get to try this one again.

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark brown color with a dark brown medium sized head. Good head retention and lacing. Nutty aroma with caramel, smoke and an herbal finish. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, smoke, nutty notes, leafy hops with a lingering bitterness. Medium-full bodied.

Pours a dark black color with a mediumish brown head. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Taste is very much of coffee. Quite tasty. I like the flavor of this beer very much. Mmm

Bottle, shared with the table at Hop Leaf Chicago. Dark brown, generous tan head. Sweet aromas of chocolate with hints of spices and vanilla. Hearty palate with dark roast and heaps of sweet chocolate, vanilla creaminess. Sweet and hearty.

Draft at Publican. Pours a deep black with brown at the edges. Tan head. Nose is roasty and chocolate, but also some strange phenol notes. I do not care for the yeast they used in this. Lots of tar and a bit muddy. Some chocolate comes through, but this was very overwhelming and boozy in a bad way.

From the tap poured a dark brown color with a good amount of head. Toasted sweet malty flavor with a lingering finish.

Mahogany with big, foamy, brown head / Nose of root beer, tobacco, and chocolate / Medium to full body, somewhat winey and chewy, lively carbonation, with good balance, alcohol masking, and finish / Flavors of tobacco, bittersweet chocolate, dark roast coffee, root beer, banana, and vanilla / Interesting to compare to Allagash Black Stout.
