COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year’s Fluxus was brewed with Belgian pilsen malt, light munich, malted wheat and a variety of aromatic and colored malts. It was hopped using only Alsatian Brewers Gold . It was then fermented with our house yeast at a lower than typical temperature, resulting in a more subdued ester profile than expressed in our other house yeast beers. Primary fermentation was followed by a cold maturation or "garding" period of six weeks. The resulting beer is a medium amber colored ale with a smooth lager quality. The aroma presents a complex earthiness and toasted grains, balanced by a fruity candied grape character. The full body highlights a rounded maltiness accentuated by both nutty notes, and spicy hop flavors. The finish is remarkably dry with a wine-like character and light tannins.

My Bottom Line :
Earthy yeast, bready cereals and spicy hops swirl within this Bière de Garde’s furious carbonation, leading to an herbal bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A veil of foam covers the cloudy beige-hued amber.
-The rusticity of it all is pleasant, but not entirely cohesive with the malt flavors (which are rough too).
-I have to say though that this is one of the rare authentic Bière de Garde’s I’ve tasted from an American brewery.
-This remains quite drinkable despite its potency.
-The faint nose is not too alluring (neither soft nor well defined).

Bottle.

On tap at the Farm House in Burlington. A medium amber colored brew. Low head but good carbonation. Sweet nutty aromas. Flavor is deep and malty with some complex, but well balanced sweetness. Lots of layers with this one. Low bitterness. Decent overall.

750 ccs from Blue Dog, Capone’s, Craft Ale, RR Street, and Frank Smith’s. Pours hazy deep coppery with 3-finger off-white head. Nose is grainy pale malt, grains of paradise, hops, funky yeasty notes. Tastes rock sugary yeasty, wity hops, funky sweet caramel flavors, some GOP notes, and a dry hoppy old aley finish. Solid.

Without a doubt, this is best, true to style, American brewed BdG I’ve had. Very soft and well conditioned with light honey and pear, slightly dusty yeast and a touch of crisp malt on the finish. Very nice.

Great ale, went well with cod. Rich amber color. A pleasant ale, very smooth and enjoyable for a late winter’s night.

On tap at Max’s, Baltimore. Thanks, Ed! Always a treat to try the latest Fluxus (though I haven’t always been diligent about it). This one was quite good, a bit bigger and bolder than a lot of the to-style bready BdeGs I’ve enjoyed in the past. Deep copper pour with a prickly, sticky head. Tons of retention around the glass and lacing everywhere. Fairly assertive nose with tons of raw yeasty notes, spice, and a healthy dose of bittering hops too. Dry vinous notes to taste, making for an interesting and welcome contrast subtly present throughout the beer (and making it more interesting than conventional entries in the style to me). Well rounded, balanced, but also enjoyably quirky.
