Allagash Fluxus is a beer of continuous change. Brewed differently every year to commemorate our anniversary, this yearís Fluxus is a porter brewed with a blend of 2-row, coffee and chocolate malts with blood orange pulp and zest. It was hopped using Perle, Tettnang and Glacier varieties. It was then fermented with a Belgian Abbey yeast. The resulting beer is dark brown in color with chocolate and roasted notes throughout the flavor and aroma. The blood orange has a subtle presence in the aroma and the zest expresses itself in the mouth-drying finish by leaving a lingering bitterness. This full bodied ale was the creation of Allagash brewer Patrick Saville, lover of heavy metal, beer and all things dark.

Pours pitch black with a creamy off white head. Aroma is of roasted barley and slight orange scents. Taste is mildly sweet with a fairly soft dry bitterness. Full body, lively carbonation, and smooth mouth feel. Overall a unique and enjoyable brew.

750ml bottle and on tap. Pours a deep dark brown color, with a large light brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace. The aroma contains strong coffee along with roasted malts, maple, fruit and a faint touch of hops. The taste starts out with a rich black coffee flavor followed by a very hearty roasted malt character. There are dark fruit and blood orange flavors in the background. Good carbonation, medium body. Fruity, dry, and roasty in the finish.

Iíve never been a fan of using Belgian yeast to ferment porters and stouts. But if thereís any brewery than can do it right, itís probably Allagash. The 2013 edition of Fluxus was a robust porter brewed with blood oranges and then fermented with their classic Belgian yeast strain. I do enjoy the solid porter base and the unique flavors here, but itís not especially amazing.

I poured a 750ml bottle into the official Allagash tulip glass. It was a 2013 vintage (no specific bottling date) and cost $18.99 ($0.75 per ounce).

Appearance: Seemingly black, but actually a deep shade of ruby red which is visible at the edge. Pours to a dark tan, foamy head which retains well but doesnít leave much lacing.

Smell: Fairly strong aroma of coffee and chocolate and a general Belgian yeast ester.

Taste: Right away, the palate is quite familiar of a classic robust porter. A rich sweetness of chocolate emerges immediately, followed by roasted malt and light coffee notes. The Belgian yeast character doesnít appear until the second half and creates for a slightly smoky and astringent flavor (maybe even a little phenolic). Itís not fruity like you often get in most Belgian beers, so itís a little awkward. The orange flavor is subtle and shows up right as the beer finishes and lingers momentarily in the aftertaste. Perhaps a fresh bottle would be much more robust, so perhaps itís not fair to review an older bottle (not that this bottle was seriously harmed by a yearís worth of aging). As it warms, all the flavors grow stronger creating for an interesting palette of chocolate and Belgian yeast esters. In fact, this 2013 Fluxus is probably best describe not as good or bad, but ďinteresting.Ē Take that for what itís worth.

Drinkability: Itís weird drinking the 2013 Allagash Fluxus, since the yeast gives the body a slightly spastic level of carbonation and thus makes it much less smooth than it would normally be. The mouthfeel is thin, with a slight carbonation bite to it. Itís smooth once it calms down, and it leaves a fairly clean aftertaste with no cloying sweetness.

Bottle, shared with Ferris and Parksy. Dark walnut brown pour with a very lively bubbly brown head. Hard roast, a bit of bitter chocolate and maybe some fruit acids. A solid porter, but Iím missing the orange character sadly.

Bottle - Dark malts and toast with some spice. Deep brown with a rich beige head. Dark malts, spices, orange peel, chocolate and a long roasty finish.

Dark brown/black pour with a light tan head. Aroma of roasted malts all the way. No citrus to speak of. Flavor is thin and watery with no orange character. I was pretty disappointed with this brew. Just not a lot going on and all the flavors I was expecting werenít there.

On tap at 33 West in Dover. Dark pour, smallish head with minimal lacing. This was a pretty much straight up porter. I couldnít really distinguish much orange. Roasted flavors with mild cocoa. Otherwise, not especially noteworthy.

On tap at Beercraft. Pours a thick black color with a bit of beige head. Very viscous. Lots of chocolate and mild sweetness. Can't really taste the blood orange. A little bland.

tap at samís. dark brown with a steady, solid, off white head. Nose is roasted malts, light orange zest, coffee, light cocoa. Flavor is similar. Very nicely brewed porter from a brewer which almost always only brewed Belgian-style brews. Really enjoyed this beer.
