Drink4Satan (585), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Dec 19, 2008 Pours a murky apricot colour with a puffy off white head. The aroma is of candied fruits, jagery, slightly tart yeast notes, cherry, and mild peppery spice. The flavour is aromatic and complex, with dark fruits, tart yeast, caramel, oak? and dry aromatic malts. The hops are herbal, not grassy. The finish is long, spicy, aromatic and bone dry. I appreciate that the beer is not overly sweet and that it is balanced and dry. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Dec 19, 2008 Like Westvleteren 12 toned down. Not quite as flavorful or warming as Westy. However this is a rich, complex, just plain good beer. Lots of candi sugar, dark fruits, and Belgian yeast. It is just about everything you could ask for. Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Dec 19, 2008 Draft. An amber brown body with a 1 finger tan head. Huge malty dark fruit nose fig and a vinous caramel nectar. Spices maple sweet and very enjoyable. robforbes (1083), Bremerton, Washington, USA Dec 17, 2008 pours a mahogany brown with orange tint, a small beige head, and some lacing.
smell is of pepper, spice, caramel, malt, and dark fruits.
taste is creamy, caramel, dark fruits, some woodiness to it, malt, and roasted nuts, has a slightly bitter ending. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Dec 16, 2008 Bottle. Sweet ripe fruit aroma, with alcohol. Reddish copper body, small tan head. Flavor, like most Allagash Belgian-style offerings, is exceedingly sweet, bordering on cloying. Fruit, malts. Alcohol and sweetness in the finish. Too sweet for me. m4rest88 (216), Beverly Hills, California, USA Dec 14, 2008 Pours with an amber hue that sits below a light brown head that lasts - the appearance is quite good-looking. Good lacing as well.
Aroma is of dark fruits, molasses, and caramel with a tad bit of strawberries.
Flavor has a sweet beginning, and a sweet ending. The dark fruits and caramel notes come through very strongly in the taste. The other dominant taste is brandy in the beer.
Lively carbonation. BMan1113VR (2755), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Dec 14, 2008 Batch 15. Pours with a large, off-white creamy head with great lacing. Very murky to opaque, pretty amber brown body. Aroma of raspberry, dark fruits, plums, a bit of toffee, a touch of burnt malt, oak and caramel. Taste is of raisins, raspberries, a bit of soggy malt, alcohol, caramel, brandy and butterscotch. Creamy with light bubbles. Tasted young, but I think I am going to try to age a bottle for 5 years or so. pintocb (508), Darsville, Georgia, USA Dec 10, 2008 Dark amber. Sweet nose. Raisins and alcohol. Taste is hot. Tons of alcohol. Some dark fruit flavors. Could use some age.
