Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Mar 7, 2005 Pours ruby red with no noticeable head. Complex with a fruity taste and strong noticeable alcohol aftertaste. Decent, but overkill to my taste buds. Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Mar 2, 2005 Thin dense head of fine bubbles. Reduces to a nice wisp of foam. Head refoms nicely upon swirling. Great aroma with raisins, brown sugar and some spices. Color is a murky orange mahagony. Flavor is very smooth and a little sweet. Some yeast, sugars, spices and malts. Little bit of roastyness also. Nice alcohol warming as it goes down. Finish is yeasty and spicey with a bit of hops and a bit of dark fruit. A pretty damn good quad. Not as complex as the trapists but still quite good for an American brewery. AleDrinker (1090), Sunnyvale, California, USA Feb 24, 2005 Pours amber red with a thin head. Subtle aroma of raisins, and slight malt. Flavor quite complex. Smooth and creamy at first, then the hot alcohol creeps in, and finally ends with a bitter kick. In the mouth I also detected a bit smoke, raisins, and alcohol. Superb. mdi (573), Nebraska, USA Feb 15, 2005 75cl bottle, no dating anywhere I could see, I know I bought it back in June ’04...Lighter in color than I expected, quite carbonated, and a very thick tan head sat on top...it clung to the glass as I sipped leaving some nice lace...Everything about this beer is mellow...subtle...udnerstated....slight fruity/malty aroma, give way to a slightly more pronounced raisiny flavor. I found it extremely drinkable, but not luscious or ponderous. a bit sticky in the end. A well-done mellow beer. bombshelter (349), Washington, Washington DC, USA Feb 8, 2005 Updated: Mar 23, 2005bottle from dean & deluca in dc. aroma is yeasty, with indication of the high alcohol content as the beer warms. very little indication of hops. head leaves zero lacing, and color is a slightly cloudy dark amber. flavor is a complex malty offering, but the alcohol flavar is not masked nearly well enough.
re-tasted on tap at the reef. Alcohol not as noticable, but malty sweetness (though excellent complex flavor) sticks around too long. temporrari (327), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jan 29, 2005 Pours a dark orange color. Aroma is fairly weak. Flavor is too. It isn’t bad, but it’s very overpriced and not even close to being on the level of beers that come from Belgium. It just doesn’t have that Belgian feeling. Disappointing brew. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Jan 25, 2005 750 ml bottle poured into an allagash snifter. Pours a very light brown/deep amber. This is probably the lightest color quad I’ve had. The head is very large with tiny bubbles that leave a great lace on the glass. Aroma is subdued slightly especially when it is chilled but perks up a bit as it warms. Even then you still have to get real close to notice all the aromas. Smell is moslty dominated by clove and some barnyard aromas, but the malt takes a backseat to the phenols and a hint of fruity esters. Flavor is nicely balanced between malt hops and belgian yeast character. Hints of caramel, plum, raisin, then some herbal hops in the finish. The yeast character remains in the flavor from start to finish. Slightly acidic though, which actually makes it have a nice finish. Well rounded quad, but lacks intensity in the aroma, and an overall smoothness in flavor that rochefort 10 has. A well made beer, but I think this one is slightly over-priced at $10 a bottle. Ill take thier tripel for $5 anyday over this. Rockinout (945), Kent, Ohio, USA Jan 22, 2005 Brownish color with tiny bubbles in the tan head, lacing. Crisp and carbonated plenty but feels full on the palate. Bready and spicy with a touch of caramel. Thanks for sharing Drew.
