jsquire (2087), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Dec 20, 2004 Reddish amber color out of the bottle with a foamy beige head. Sweet nose of dark, stone fruit and alcohol. Flavor of burnt caramel sweetness, plums, hard toffee candy with alcohol and toast in the finish. Very nice beer. JoeM500 (1876), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA Dec 20, 2004 Dark reddish brown with a thick white head, excellent retention and lacing. Nose is full of raisin and cinnamon, hints of apple and brown sugar. Body is very simialr to the Dubbel Reserve in that it is rich and creamy. Allagash beers tend to be thin at the middle after it warms but offer wonderfully long aftertastes, this is no exception. The alcohol is a bit on the forefront, but the raisin and toffee that I enjoyed in the Dubbel was present and strong, some nice soft sweet spiciness in the way of cinnamona and brown sugar lingered long after the tingly alcohol wears off. Hoppiness at the finish is grassy and fruity but mostly hidden by the ethery alcohol at the back. fly (1331), austin, Tejas, USA Dec 17, 2004 Allagash has brought Belgium one step closer with each release it seems. Their beers are not of the knock you over the head variety, but more the subtly nuanced variety. Fruit and yeast in the aroma is rather pleasant. and at 10% would say that the alcohol is fairly well hidden. Just a well put together effort. Very nice. Odeed (1666), Bakersfield, California, USA Dec 15, 2004 i popped this open in honor of getting my new truck today.i spilled the four into my duvel glass and it gave off a nice white head that leveled out to a nice flat coat after a minute or two.i must say i was very impressed with the beautiful ruby red color.it complimented the "fish eye" vision of the duvel glass.the aroma was pretty nice as well.dominated by belgian yeast, but also exposed some candy, bubblegum, and peppermint.the first swig gave off alot of the same impression as the aroma.i think this brew may need some aging as it was really good, but the begian yeast dominated the overall flavor and aroma.very good but id like to try it in a year or so. hotstuff (3175), Indiana, USA Dec 12, 2004 Updated: Aug 9, 2009Corked & caged bottle. Medium ivory head with fine-small bubbles that mostly diminished. Very little carbonation, cloudy, fair lacing, and an orange brown hue. Malty, sweet, fruity (berries?) and a sugary aroma. Nice! Flavor was wonderfully sweet, malty, caramel, and the alcohol was well hidden. Medium bodied. Definitely worth of a try IMO. atpayne (615), Zionsville, Indiana, USA Dec 8, 2004 Pours dark amber brown with small creamy tan head. The aroma is malty but also citrucy from hops. There is also a maple syrup or candy sugar smell and some yeast. The flavor is quite malty and full of dark fruits and yeast. The malts gain some sweetness as the beer warms and it eventually finishes quite clean, with only a hint of alcohol. chriso (4683), London, Greater London, England Dec 5, 2004 Allagash limits itself to Belgian style ales and, judging from the two I’ve tried, does a pretty good job. Hazy copper/bronze colour. This is a big, powerful, beer in every way. Orangey hops are very evident in the aroma and the flavour. Yeast and candy sugar also in the aroma. Spice, more hops and crystallised fruit in the flavour. Very Belgian in style. Some sweetness, but also noticeable acidity on the finish. Impressed, yet somehow it seems to have less complexity and refinement than the best Belgians and I think the alcohol would get a touch intrusive had I been drinking a whole bottle rather than just a taster. But it’s a really good beer and I wonder whether the cornucopia of the very best of US beers at one sitting is making me just a little more nitpicking than I would otherwise be. Bottle at the DC gathering.
Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 4, 2004 Good yeast and some cherry, pink grapefuit, grainy and grapefruit texture and medium mouthfeel. Carbonation. Understated in sweetness and fruit flavour.
My drinking buddy liked this a lot more than I did. Smooth
