tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 3, 2004 Updated: Sep 4, 2004Orange zest, candy sugar and mixed berries in the very appealing aroma. Opaque, dark orange with off-white head that diminishes to ring. Bitter orange, milky flavours (almost chocolate-like) with plenty of dark fruits, notes of alcohol and a long sweet finish. Bitterness emerges towards the end. Fine carbonation is lively on the tongue. Medium body though feels somewhat lighter due to airy mouthfeel. Contrasts nicely with the heavy malt and fruit flavours. Bottle marked Batch #4 (enjoyed with MartinT and Rastacouere). Re-rate (8-3-9-5-17=4.2 / 8/4/2004). Roughly average score posted.
Original Rating (7-3-7-4-14=3.5 / 5/3/2004) Fruity, citrusy, spicy deep malty aroma. Deep, opaque amber-brown with off-white head that recedes to a thin cover. Typical sweet candy and yeast belgian strong ale. Peppery spiciness a bit simple and flavour profile is short. Bit of an alcoholic twang in the finish. All told, it’s a bit too sweet. Wonderful creamy mouthfeel with a nice prickly carbonation on the edges of the tongue. A nice begian strong if perhaps a bit simple and sweet. Bottle. mdi (573), Nebraska, USA May 2, 2004 Batch #6 Amber/brown off-white head, thick lace bubbly. SPicy fruits carmel malts chocoaltey some earthy woody secrets whisper about the nose...thyme, black pepper, smoke in the distance? Bit creamy to drink fading to bitterness. bitter chocolate curt finish with lingering herbs. I like it lots. It really resembles a homebrew I did w/ old Saaz, Special ’B’ and chocoalte malts, added in some Thyme and crakced black pepper, fermented with Wyeast 1214 around 56*F, airlock turned black from the sulphor, which aged out. Mines a bit more acidic, overall this is a funky, chunky beer. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Apr 28, 2004 very nice amber color, nice thin white head that stays forever, cloudy with a citrus and spice aroma. Smooth spicy belgian style taste. Nice smooth and malty taste with hints of fruit. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 25, 2004 Spiced Belgian style, very similiar to Unibroue. Excellent aroma, nice white creamy foam and carbation. Cloudy orange brown color. Yeast with noticeable pieces. Moderate malt and citrus orange peel, pear, hint bannana very pleasant fruit and herbs. Coriander (which may reduce fertility). Bonus for complexity. Good competition for wine.
canary dog (441), Rutland, Vermont, USA Apr 16, 2004 Fruity and slightly spicey. Perfect amount of carbonation and body. Finish is smooth, despite the initial taste notes suggesting otherwise. Well balanced. Goes surprisingly well with chips and salsa. A tasty brew. sfontain (506), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 15, 2004 Pours a lovely, pale red/orange color with a small, lasting off-white head and tiny floating sediment. Fruity aroma with cloves and a hint of smoke. Flavor is definitely spicy; the big one I pick out is the clove flavor. Very yeasty finish. I will probably appreciate this more later as I try more Belgians. ukoolaid (572), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA Apr 13, 2004 Bottle. Very nice amber color with maybe a hint of red (it was dark in the bar). Aroma of floral and fuity malts. Taste is smooth with very nice fruit malts and a little hop in the finish. kbjames (242), Utah, USA Apr 5, 2004 This is an ok belgian I suppose. This style is not my thing but the beer is very flavorfull with lots of spices and herbs
