Allagash Grand Cru is deep golden in color, and has a firm yet refined malty palate. Taste and aroma have suggestions of smoke and licorice, with subtle hints of fruit and spice. An excellent beer to enjoy during the cooler seasons.

Dark Amber pour, large foamy off-white head that lasts. Spice aroma. Taste is a bit chalky, with a hint of spice. Not much in the finish. Enjoyable, but not outstanding.

Darker golden color and smoothier taste than I expected.

This was disappointing. Pours almost a rusty brown. The bottle I had was NOT "deep golden". The head was light brown to off-white in color and was generous. The initial smell was bitter and reeked of bitter hops and overdone spice. The taste was soapy and a little metallic but it could have been from the hops. Finished also with a bitter kick. Not horrible but nothing worth seeking out. Stick with the Allagash Triple.

This was a very nice, fruity ale that went wonderfully with my dinner of chicken and sesame-peanut noodles. Yum. Amber with a nice subdued fruity/spicy/yeasty aroma and flavor- it was very, how shall I say (I hate to use the phrase) "drinkable". Anyway, good and recommended, though not exactly exciting.

This beer was similar to a Belgian golden ale, except much more of a malty flavor. It was hearty and filling with a nice mouthfeel. Big head when poured.

Leather colored; Head had meduim retention; Raisin and plum in the nose. Slightly astringent. Medicinal, but not too bad. Spices are evident, but hard to pinpoint.

Bottle. Hmmm, this is too bad. I usually like what Allagash does, but I donít like this. It looks pretty, but thatís about it. Golden mead-like color, but with absolutely no head. And it smells too sweet: honey, yes, but overdone. And the taste follows suit. Overly sweet, cloying, and the spice combination (or ratio?) just doesnít work. Hard to see how this and the Tripel (which is just about perfect) come from under the same roof... (Looking at a few ratings from 3, or even 2, years ago, I wonder if something significant has changed in the recipe...)

Bottle. Hazy amber coloured with an off white head. Aroma of fruits, spices and celery. Flavour of fruits, spices, celery and rubber.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2006 Re-rated 12/5/2006. I decided to buy another bottle at another store to see if perhaps the first bottle was not up to par given my first rating of 2.6. Pour was identical to first bottle. This bottle was a bit more aromatic with notes of apple, citrus and sweet malt. Not much fruit noted in the flavor. In fact, the flavor is fairly indistinct. Thin mouthfeel. I ended up adding three points on this re-rate, but I think I have to accept that I just donít care for this beer.

Original rating. 12 oz. bottle. Poured a hazy brown/gold with a thin off-white head. Very light aroma of malt and some grassy notes. Light flavored and light bodied with some citrus noted along with some malt sweetness. Watery, thin mouthfeel. I did not care for this one and it certainly did not strike me as a winter brew.
