Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Thanks to ilovedarkbeer for this one. Bronze, clear pour with an average sized, white head with good lacing. Notes of cinnamon, brown sugar, reaspberries and cherries. Acidic taste that also reinforces the raspberry impression. Unbalanced, and not great. Very fizzy and dry mouthfeel.

Great looking BSA. Orange reddish color with a nice light brown head. Nose is sweet and very pleasant, some hops maybe and a bit of bitterness. Nice nose. Tate is a bit different somewhat unbalanced and acidic. Oddly sweet and the mouthfeel is akward to say the least. Intriguing but the taste is where this beer lacks. Some fruity notes were also picked up in the taste which is odd because it appears no fruit is used in the brewing process.

750mL bottle. Dark amber orange color with a large off white head. Fruity, estery aroma, some applejuice and faint spice. Sharp, spicy flavors up front. Some malty sweetness then manifests. Ruddy, herbal hoppiness and lingering spicy esters. Chalky bitterness in the finish, yeasty flavors persist. Mouthfeel is medium, somewhat dry.

Rating # 600!! 750ml bottle acquired in trade with Beachbum25. A nice clear ruby pour with a head that was good size and off white. At first whiff reminded me of grape juice. As the beer warmed, more of the standard Belgian aromas started to become present. This was a pretty damn good Belgian strong ale. Thanks Jim!

Sept. 2007 - Beer poured an orange color with some head and lacing. Not much aroma. The dryness of the flavor was the first thing to hit me, second was all the peppery spices. Underneath were some floral and malty notes, maybe even a touch of evergreen like hoppiness (which reading the description I think comes from the Simcoe hops). Very yeasty as well.

Pours dark copper, almost amber and hazy. A generous head of off white froth rose quickly to at least an inch and a half. The thick foam settled down within a few minutes, with no lacework. Aromatics are laced with caramel drizzeled hard candies with peachy, earthy undertones. A bit resinous and sugary, with a balancing citrus nod. Belgianesque in a big way with plenty of phenols..Apples, cloves, and some bubblegum. The nose finishes out with candied tangerine segments and whiff of cracked garlic. The mouthfeel is tacky and sticky, with enough carbonation to keep it from getting cloying. The pallet is sweetish and laden with malt, brown sugar, and a spicy bitterness. Hopping is not very prevalent other than whats evident in the bitterness. Warming with a smooth bitterness, and punctuated with chipped toffee and citrus fruits. Finishes sticky, clovey and warming. Certainly not within the realm of IPA, but tasty nonetheless.

Thanks to puzzl for sharing this one. Deep amber-gold with orange-red highlights. Fruity and juicy with a light vineous aroma. Cherries and berries with a bright tropical character as well. Rich Allagash yeast character really comes though. Very Belgian and not very hoppy at all. Sweet and fruity with a light peppery character on the back. Nice brew and not al all what I was expecting.
