Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Pour is amber with a huge bubbly head and great lacing. Nose of caramel, herbs, malts and some raisins as well. Taste is a somewhat hoppy, Belgian spiced malt mixed with darker fruits. Very drinkable with a nice mouthfeel.

750ml Bottle: Sweet aroma smells of caramel, malts, herbs, yeast, brown sugar, raisins, and piney hops. Poured amber/copper in color with a large, foamy, rocky, off-white head that lasted throughout. Good lacing. Hazy. Sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of malts, dark fruits, roasted malts, herbs, candy sugar, raisins, alcohol, and pine and resin hops. Medium body. Average texture. Average to lively carbonation. Sweet but hoppy finish.

Bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, tupalev & jerc -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a slightly hazy orange-amber with an average size semi-lasting off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, floral hops, light spices, some fruit and Belgian yeast. Flavour of alcohol, floral hops, yeast and grain -- too boozy and the mix of an IPA with a Belgian beer doesn’t work for me, I’m not crazy about it. Medium bodied. Meh, this one’s not for me.

Bottle shared with tupalev, HogTownHarry, blankboy and jerc - HogTownHarry’s bottle. Reddish-amber with a big off-white head. Aroma is very nice, quite hoppy with some floral notes - almost IPA-like. Flavour is quite IPA-ish as well, with Belgian yeast notes. It’s an interesting combination, but it doesn’t totally work for me.

(bottle): Don’t know much about it, except that it cost $17 for a 750mL bottle, 2-4 times what I normally buy.. Pours a medium brown color, very murky. Off-tan head, big & lasting. Big bubbles & good lacing. Very effervescent, lignt floral aroma. Not as dark or heavy an aroma as a belgian strong. Also there’s a sharp smell, not quite metallic. But kind of plasticy. Uh oh...I think that usually means something bad. Sharp strong taste, with that same plasticy but more dull. Spicy aftertaste. Warming up some more...Not as plasticy and the flavors are a little more muted. Spicy somewhat hoppy & not too dark or heavy. More perfumy & floral. Goes well with salty chips & salsa. Tasty beer.

(750ml bottle) Purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle for $9.99. Great yeasty nose, peppermint and vanilla. Very good leaf, teaa and tonic flavour. Its so smooth, creamy and yeasty fantastic. Lemon in the finish presents a happy journey.

Bottle (750ml - corked & caged). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc and tupalev - my bottle. Slightly cloudy copper pour with a huge (heh) fluffy tan head. Aroma- sharp, dry, spicy and boozy. Taste - way too pungently floral, bitter and dead spice, not much malt profile, just boozy, astringent and pungently, drily bitter. Not horrid, but I really didn’t like it that much.

Minor gushing. Hazed amber with a denseish creamy tan colored head. Sweet malt chines through. Light tutti fruity. A small amount of cookie? A bit of alcohol, a little spicy. Maybe that’s the hops? (Aha, I see Simcoe hops, that explains the spicy tutty fruity!). Thin on the carbonation. Not watery, a bit creamy. Big bold flavor. Fruity. A bit boozy, but not in a bad way. Spicy hops show up. A little sharp and tannic even. Still some tutti fruity, a dry finish indeed.
