Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Bottle. Pours decent cheddar yellow with an aroma of peach preserves and yeast. Very yeasty flavor with hints of dull orange and peach. Average mouthfeel. Not worth the price ($18) I paid for it. I’ve had better for half the cost.

Bottle: Poured a mahogany color ale with a huge foamy head with some good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with some dry with some dry Czech hops. Taste is also dominated by those sweet malt with limited dry fruits characteristics or oak notes. Body is quite full with some great carbonation and no alcohol was noticeable.

Pours a very dense but small head. Has a nice Dark golden/ brown color. Aroma is very weak, but has a little hop smell. Flavor is a light citrus taste with a present but not strong hop taste. Finish is a nice slightly sweet. Better if you allow this beer to warm. Drink slightly chillde to room temp for more hop flavor. Its drinkable, but not savorable.

Consumed 5-12-07. Dark copper, minimal head. Big tropical fruity esters, banana and I swear pineapple. No malt detectable whatsoever. Flavor again very tropical like juicy fruit. Some malt is there for backbone but not much to speak of. Lingering sweetness though. Nice but hard to raise any one category.

750ml bottle provided by tjthresh at my tasting, 10/12. Pour is slightly hazy red orange with a small off white head. Aroma is big sweetness and some Belgian yeastiness. Taste has some nice yeastiness too it, but the sweetness breaks through a bit awkardly, and overpowers the flavor a bit. This one ended up being a bit bland.

Pours a cloudy peach color with a thin white head. Aroma of hops, fruits, yeast and honeyish sweetness. Flavor of hops, honey, fruits and yeast. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and soft carbonation.

Disappointing aroma. Sort of a candy corn aroma.
Amber orange hue with some off white head.
Again, hugely dissappointing. I was really looking for more hop character, taste a lot of toast and candy sugar.
Syrupy slick. evaportating alcohol
I don’t know what to say. I’m very disappointed with this beer. Oh well. Allagash has made many great beers. One miss step is okay I suppose.
