Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Bottle. Body-medium honey body with some haze. Very thin ring of bubbles, Nose-stale PNW hops, alcohol, metal, light saison. Taste-soft unsweet caramel, medium bitter, light unsweet apple, light coriander “saison” notes. Basically a Belgian brown with some hops.

750ml bottle. Full rich orange-brown color, assumably unfiltered. Sweet, herbal, and a little spicy. Piny aftertaste and aroma. Lots of subtle hopping. Full of flavor, and balanced enough to pull it off in a classy fashion.

RBSG 07 Minneapolis Grand Tasting: Copper color, nose of bright hoppy yeast and fig. Lots of yeast and hop, some cascade and centennial. Nice hoppy notes dance around with the Belgian yeast. Caramelly finish, quite good! I like.

The body is cloudy medium copper with a yellowish head. The aroma has funky caramel and cake. There is also some musty socks. The taste has basic grapefruit with some bread crust. There is also a little bit of peanuts. Nice soft mouthfeel. Better than most hopped up Belgian style brews I have tried.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a tan head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of fruit, while the flavor is sweet mlaty with notes of fruit and hints of alcohol, leading to a dry finish.

Bottle. [Courtesy of BierKönig, quality tasting @ Papsoe] Large creamy off-white head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Light cloudy amber color. Aroma of bread, caramel, grain, toasted malt, nutty, floral, pine and fruity notes. Full bodied with an alcoholic texture and an average carbonation. Moderated sweet flavor with light bitter notes. Sweet warming finish. Another nice beer this evening. 28-09-2007

750 ml bottle. Poured a hazy orange color. Head was three fingers high and off white. It dissipated relatively quickly and left only a bit of lace behind. Aroma was of apple, light pine resin, alcohol, caramel, and toasted bread. Very effervescent; bit of a gusher actually. Slightly sweet on the tongue with mild to moderate hop bitterness. Tasted predominantly of malty caramel and subdued grapefruit with very little alcohol flavor. Not bad.
