Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Bottle. [Courtesy of BierKönig, quality tasting @ Papsoe] Large creamy off-white head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Light cloudy amber color. Aroma of bread, caramel, grain, toasted malt, nutty, floral, pine and fruity notes. Full bodied with an alcoholic texture and an average carbonation. Moderated sweet flavor with light bitter notes. Sweet warming finish. Another nice beer this evening. 28-09-2007

750 ml bottle. Poured a hazy orange color. Head was three fingers high and off white. It dissipated relatively quickly and left only a bit of lace behind. Aroma was of apple, light pine resin, alcohol, caramel, and toasted bread. Very effervescent; bit of a gusher actually. Slightly sweet on the tongue with mild to moderate hop bitterness. Tasted predominantly of malty caramel and subdued grapefruit with very little alcohol flavor. Not bad.

The aroma was fruity, earthy and contained a peppery phenolic character. The earthy and piney hop character was lightly catty (think pee) and had a notable citrus. Caramel shined through as well. The beer was hugely effervescent but had hardly any head retention at all on the very slightly hazy amber beer. The flavor was peppery with a citrus character and caramel malt presence. The caramel also had a toasty nature. The hop bittering was high, yet restrained, the hop flavor was earthy, catty and grassy with citrus to boot. The body was medium full and while well carbonated, the body was a bit thick on the palate. The finish was caramel and hops lasting long into the aftertaste. A nice beer, but not really worth the price of admission. The beer lacked complexity and seemed to be more of a Belgian Pale Ale which was boosted to the next level in alcohol and in the use of American hops. 750 ml corked and bailed bottle. $19.99

(750ml Bottle) Pours a hazy amber body with a medium white head. Aroma of herbs, orange, toasted bread, caramel, and earthiness. Flavor of herbs, caramel, oak, rotten peaches, and funkiness. Completely out of whack…

From the description, I was expecting a real hopbomb. But now, just very complex hop characteristics. I don’t know what the going rate is in other parts of the country, but they wanted $19.99 for this and that is WAY out of line for what you get.
