Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Hoppy for a Belgian. I had this at Great Lost Bear in Portland. I find the beers of Allagash are unique.

The first smell is a little phenolic and medicinal. The head is creamy looking, beer is reddish and cloudy in color with lots of carbonation streaming towards the top of the chalice, the taste is odd and slightly harsh. My novice palate cannot seem to detect a hint of the simcoes used in this beer or any hops for that matter. Once, this beer starts to approach room temperature it gets much better. The beer starts to exhibit hoppy qualities (contradicting my previous statements) and is actually pretty good but I still don’t know how my amateur palate feels about this Belgian IPA thing. I probably wouldn’t buy this again but I will try other Allagash beers since this was my first. I think I got a really good deal because this only cost me $8.99 and I think it is supposed to retail for around $15. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-02-2007 16:46:30

out of the presentable cork and cage. Allowed about 1.5 years of age in my cellar. mild light fresh aroma, nothing to stringent or over powering. light golden with a litle bit darker hugh and full white fluffy/fizzy head. mild yeast presence with some mild fruit and malt notes in the flavor, smooth freshh crisp and solid palate. overal pretty smooth and light, not a very deep beer on the front but good from beginning to end.

Serving: 750 ml bottle. Appearance: Deep orange color with hints of amber. Rocky, white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma: Aggressive notes of perfume and soap with light notes of grain. Floral and light fruit notes (perhaps apricot) also emerged. Taste: Yeasty, some soap and floral notes, a little candy sweetness, clove, and light apple cider notes. Complex and really quite good. Palate: Medium, slightly prickly carbonation with a light mouthfeel. Medium, bitter finish. Overall: A quality brew by Allagash that highlights the hops. That being said, it is a bit on the overpriced side. Rebuy: It is worth trying once, but I don’t see any need to try it again.

Bottle poured at Saraveza... Came out a hazy orange with a thin white head. Floral aroma of hops and yeast. Dry, well carbonated palate that handled the biscuity character nicely. Well spiced with wheat malts, alcohol warmth and a hop bitterness and tanginess. Citrusy and floral all the way through.

I thought this beer tasted a damn sight better than it smelled. the aroma was fruity and weird. Flavor was dry and yeasty with a nice touch of sweetness to it. I thought this was a rather good beer except for the $20 price tag.

Draught > Flying Saucer. Would not have guessed this was a Belgian except that it came from Allagash. Damn tasty. IPAish flavors. Great balance. Incredibly easy drinker. 8.5% packs a punch.

(Draught) pours a nice orange with fluffy white head and great lacing. Nose has pine, grapefruit and pineapple. Taste has some characteristics of Belgian yeast, quite sweet and extremely well balanced for an IPA. The hops do not assault but have a nice bitterness to them. Mouthfeel is creamy and well carbonated, very appropriate. Doesn’t finish bitter which is the mark of a truly great IPA for me because it is there in the taste.
