Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Pours out a dark brown color with a huge tan head that goes away pretty quickly. Beer is very lively with CO2. Smells fruity and pretty grassy, almost like a saison. Reminds me of fantome Hiver. Taste is fruity at first and it has a pretty biting hop bitterness at the finish. Interesting enough, but not really what I was expecting for 21 dollars a bottle. Every Allagash cant be an Interlude, but I think this is better than the average scores are.

Typically handsome brew from Allagash, a deep amber pour with a pretty major head and retention. The initial aroma gives off more of a saison vibe than one usually expects from this brewer, and notes of melon and grass come through pretty prominently. The flavor starts off combining some of those features with a really aggressive, almost biting hop profile. But honestly, the hop character dissipates fairly quickly and leaves a beer that is far more uneven than Allagash usually offers, even tasting a bit like pickle at points. Not a triumph by any means, particularly at this price.

C&C 750. Clear amber gold with a big tan head. Certainly hoppy, orange and spicy caramel nose. Flavor is caramel, lightly spiced, with an orange citrus and grass bite. Not really working for me. One of those beers you can tell is well made, but does not completely come together.

Pours an amber gold, medium white head. Aroma and flavor are true to it’s brilliantly punny name (humulone, which is the molecule pictured on the label). This didn’t bring any comparisons to mind, except (vaguely) for Chouffe Houblon Triple. Odd combination of belgian esters and um, humulone (alpha acids). Not my favorite offering from Allagash, but it was good enough and offered something interesting. Probably not worth the $13 though.

Deep slightly hazy amber with very little head. Interesting hop notes in aroma. Some grapefruit, lots of yeast. Medium bodied and werll carbonated. Lacks overall flavor. A bit weak initially but impoves later. I was pretty dissapointed in this one especially after paying $13 for it. In the end it wasn’t bad but I expected better from Allagash.

Poured dark brown with 1 inch of tan head. Clinging, foamy lace. Aromas of malty wheat and some sour yeast. After smelling, the taste threw me off guard. Contrasting to the sour scent, this beer contains flavors of nutty malts, caramel, huge grains, slightly bitter with a well rounded palate. Very warming, if off-balanced. High carbonation. Pretty good.

Hazy golden-amber color with a medium white head. Aroma has a nice mix of sugary Belgian malts with Simcoe and various hops. Flavor has a nice citrus, candy malt taste upfront, but although the hops are there, it just doesn’t seem to come out as tasty as it smells. Smooth and lightly hoppy, the feel and finish are decent but nowhere near some of the better hoppy Belgian styles. Disappointing at $15/750ml.

I found this at Superstar in Huntington, NY as I was looking for something different to regain faith in beer after a Corona and Coors in recent passings. After the initial sticker shock, I got it home and poured it after a slight chill to find an interesting red/amber malt taste. I liked the slightly sweet rolling taste, though it was missing some elements I like in beer.
