Sammys (428), Portland, Maine, USA Jul 30, 2007 Pours an amber gold, medium white head. Aroma and flavor are true to it’s brilliantly punny name (humulone, which is the molecule pictured on the label).
This didn’t bring any comparisons to mind, except (vaguely) for Chouffe Houblon Triple. Odd combination of belgian esters and um, humulone (alpha acids). Not my favorite offering from Allagash, but it was good enough and offered something interesting. Probably not worth the $13 though. BierBauch (638), Cape Coral Waterfront Wonderland, Florida, USA Jul 30, 2007 Deep slightly hazy amber with very little head. Interesting hop notes in aroma. Some grapefruit, lots of yeast. Medium bodied and werll carbonated. Lacks overall flavor. A bit weak initially but impoves later. I was pretty dissapointed in this one especially after paying $13 for it. In the end it wasn’t bad but I expected better from Allagash. Floback (333), Naples, Florida, USA Jul 29, 2007 Poured dark brown with 1 inch of tan head. Clinging, foamy lace. Aromas of malty wheat and some sour yeast. After smelling, the taste threw me off guard. Contrasting to the sour scent, this beer contains flavors of nutty malts, caramel, huge grains, slightly bitter with a well rounded palate. Very warming, if off-balanced. High carbonation. Pretty good. JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 28, 2007 Hazy golden-amber color with a medium white head. Aroma has a nice mix of sugary Belgian malts with Simcoe and various hops. Flavor has a nice citrus, candy malt taste upfront, but although the hops are there, it just doesn’t seem to come out as tasty as it smells. Smooth and lightly hoppy, the feel and finish are decent but nowhere near some of the better hoppy Belgian styles. Disappointing at $15/750ml. bonbright7 (173), Bellport, New York, USA Jul 27, 2007 I found this at Superstar in Huntington, NY as I was looking for something different to regain faith in beer after a Corona and Coors in recent passings. After the initial sticker shock, I got it home and poured it after a slight chill to find an interesting red/amber malt taste. I liked the slightly sweet rolling taste, though it was missing some elements I like in beer. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jul 27, 2007 Appearance: Pours a hazy, dark amber body with an effervescent, even explosive off-white head.
Smell: Grapefruit and pine with a small amount of caramel and candy sugar.
Taste: Thin, dull malt flavors along with a pine and grapefruit hop character as well as an odd yeastiness. Finishes dry and astringent.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Cripplingly fizzy.
Drinkability: A beer unbefitting of it’s pricetag. Tmoney99 (4652), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jul 27, 2007 Bottle from River’s Bend. Poured a hazy amber color with an average fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate tart citrus and yeast aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and thin particles. Medium balanced citrus flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Good, not great. aracauna (2357), Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2007 I was curious about what the molecule on the label was, so wunderbier did a quick search and found only one site
(in Polish even) that said it was humolone. Ahh, that explains the name Hugh Malone. Clever. Still, I’m not getting anywhere near enough hops to justify the name. I get the sweet pale malts first and the hops only come through in a light bitterness at the end.
