Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Appearance: Pours a hazy, dark amber body with an effervescent, even explosive off-white head. Smell: Grapefruit and pine with a small amount of caramel and candy sugar. Taste: Thin, dull malt flavors along with a pine and grapefruit hop character as well as an odd yeastiness. Finishes dry and astringent. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Cripplingly fizzy. Drinkability: A beer unbefitting of it’s pricetag.

Bottle from River’s Bend. Poured a hazy amber color with an average fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate tart citrus and yeast aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and thin particles. Medium balanced citrus flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Good, not great.

I was curious about what the molecule on the label was, so wunderbier did a quick search and found only one site (in Polish even) that said it was humolone. Ahh, that explains the name Hugh Malone. Clever. Still, I’m not getting anywhere near enough hops to justify the name. I get the sweet pale malts first and the hops only come through in a light bitterness at the end.

Piney hop aroma and sweet caramel malt aroma. Light yeast aroma. Clear light amber color Thin off white head with low head retention and good lacing. Low malt flavor. Big, piney hop flavor and bitterness. Big hoppy dry finish. Medium body and smooth mouthfeel with some alcoholic warming. Very interesting

Hugh was happy to see me as he quickly erupted upon withdrawl of his cork. After settling down, it pours a clear copper orange with a thin ring of wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of earthy grapefruity hops and drier toasty malt. Body starts fairly effervescent with a nice light caramel malty sweetness, some mild oak and more earthy bittering and flavor hops toward a drier finish. A pretty nice hoppy Belgian strong ale, but not something I’d normally buy given the price.

Is this an American hopped Belgian tripel? Is this an American Imperial IPA with Belgian yeast? Beautiful hazy deep amber with huge foamy head. Nose of bread and yeast and oranges. Strong taste of pine and orange and grapefruit, of bread and yeast and sweet malts and caramel. Nailed it overall only because of the price. For $160 / case this should be in the same league as Westvleteren 12, and of course it’s not.

Bottle. Nose is hoppy-sweet with notes of pine sap and citrus. Deep opaque brown with a thick foamy white head which leaves heavy thick lacing. Serious palate, heavy with carbonation. Not too comples, hop bitterness with some sweeter undertones.
