The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

I thought this beer tasted a damn sight better than it smelled. the aroma was fruity and weird. Flavor was dry and yeasty with a nice touch of sweetness to it. I thought this was a rather good beer except for the $20 price tag.

appearance: clear golden, with a big, bright white, frothy head. aroma: bright--citrus is strong up front, with blood orange, grapefruit, and lemon zest; then comes honeyed graham crackers and a bit of pie crust and white pepper. taste: slightly sweet, crackery-honey malts, then floral, citrus, and grassy hops. finish: smooth, but also lively, with a bit of yeasty sweetness and a delicate dry palate. notes: Feels more like a Belgian IPA, but thatís just a quibble. What it is, is a great beer. Good palate. Just enough sweetness to add character and balance out a judicious and surgeon-like application of hops. Would drink again. Bottle from Roots Market in Olney, Maryland.

Finally got around to ticking this bad boy. It was always too expensive, but then I snagged a single 12 ouncer for $4 in North Carolina. Cloudy golden yellow color with a massive, lasting white head. Thick lacing on the glass. Big citrus Simcoe hops, lemony and herbal. The flavor is dry and hoppy with a bitter finish. Medium body with high carbonation. Pretty good but not anything crazy.

Draught @ Alewife. Cloudy dark yellow with almost no head, white ring, citrus-vanilla aroma, medium carbonation, medium hoppy finish with bitter aftertaste. Quite hoppy for a Belgian.

Bottle at 7.3% from Nikkiís Liquors in Providence. It pours cloudy gold with a thick white head. The nose is fresh, fragrant, bready malt, menthol, eucalyptus and pine. The taste is crisp, bitter, pale bread, cracker, pine, earth, straw, grass and light spice with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Pleasant hoppy Belgian ale.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy burnt yellow color with a thick two finger rocky white foamy head bursting over the top of the glass. It actually wasnít too much and cleaned up nicely. Messy clingy foamy lacing sweeps nicely around the glass. The smell starts off with burst full of bitter to sweet pine over top of sweet citrus and bitter citrus. Light little bit of spice follows underneath. The taste was spicy with a sweet juicy sticky middle bursting into a really nice sweet to spicy (almost like rye, hmm...itís extremely subtle) aftertaste leading into a semi-sweet sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs good as a Belgian Strong ale, I can see it allowing just enough harshness from the bitterness to hit my tongue just right. Overall, this was just a really good beer for what it is. Iíd love to come back to it and could see it with some grilled lobster.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured yellow, hazy, nice carbonation and generous white head that left a nice lacing all over the glass. Aroma of malts, yeast and citrus fruit. Taste is hoppy, slightly bitter, some yeast and traces of malts. Very good beer, very enjoyable and with and adequate level of complexity.
