The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Pours a hazy light yellow, with a thick, creamy white head that seemed to last forever. Thick lacing through the whole drink. The aroma was fruity with undertones of pepper and wet earth. character. The beer was extremly effervescent and light on the tounge. The esscence seem to float away, even at the first touch to the mouth. The flavor was a spicy peppery with a citrus character and toasted caramel malt presence. The hop bittering was high, yet restrained, the hop flavor was earthy with some citrus. This felt more like a BPA than a Strong Ale, but really nice all around.

Nice to see this in 12 oz. bottles. Poured into a tulip. A hazy deep lemony yellow brew. Off-white head. Good carbonation. Herbal-citrus aromas. Flavor is a mix of pine, herbs, citrus and piney bitterness. Light honey malt backbone. Fruity yeast profile. Huge bitterness at the end. Not as good as I hope it would be. Overpriced in the full-size bottle format.

On tap at the brewery, very fresh. Clear yellow gold, minimal white head. Distinct honey aromas, pine resin, light tropical fruits, a bit of fresh pine zip. Light lingering bitterness, some sweetness. Clean, lightish body, long finish somewhere between earthy and bitter. Good.

750 ml bottle from BOTW (Rochester), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Hazy deep golden with a full off-white head. Aroma: Holy hops, Batman!, dank/resinous/peppery, tropical fruits, citrus, so juicy and rich, Belgian esters, quite fruity, the hops take on an evergreen personality after that, wow. Palate: Medium body, HUGE carbonation. Flav.: The extreme carbonation interferes with the flavour, still has a HUGE hop presence with lots of pine/resinous/peppery character with some nice mango-like tropical fruitiness, Belgian esters, this is a journey; dry with good bitterness and a long, complex fruity/hoppy finish,

Allagash made a good Belgian-inspired beer? Woulda never guessed...haha.

Aroma: The nose of this one is lightly Belgian yeast, with some citrus hops/rind.
Appearance: It pours a clear gold, with a small white head, and drippy lace.
Flavor: The flavor is yeast, light spice, and bitter citrus rind flavors.
Palate: The body is medium, clean, soft carbonation, dry/spice finish.
Overall Impression: I thought that this was a pretty tasty one. I’m glad I tried it for sure. Finds a good place near Belgian IPA.

Pours golden yellow-orange with a one finger white head with pretty nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus, ripe fruits, belgian yeast, sourdough bread, pine, and some light dankness. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body with a semi bitter, semi dry, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty interesting and tasty belgian IPA.

Aromas of earthy, piney, floral hops, spicy phenols, and stonefruit-like esters. Somewhat hazy yellow-gold, lasting white head. Fruity, spicy, some sweetness, nice bitterness. Very soft and creamy, light-medium bodied.

Sample at the 2014 Infected Chimipalooza on 11/01/2014. Hazy golden color with a medium foamy white head that recedes steadily. Strings of lacing. Aroma of citrus, yeast and spices. Medium body with flavors of citrusy hops, herbal yeast and malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a grapefruit and hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottled. Hazy golden hue with a huge Belgian head. Aroma is tons of citrus. Lots of lemon, orange, pineapple and a sweet maltiness. Little bit of honey in there too. Taste is candy sweetness up front with a nice dry hop finish. Lots of citrus hop flavors, orange, lemon, and maybe some pineapple. Definitely that traditional Allagash Belgian style yeast is noted. Nice mouthfeel. Super balanced IPA. Amazing.

More like a double IPA than a Belgian ale. Strong aroma with citrus, pine, and a little caramel. Very bitter fruity taste with a little underlying sweet malt. Bitter finish, a little on the thin side. Really, really good.
