Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Bottle. Hoppy spicy aroma. Light orange body, huge dense rocky white head. One of the better and more interesting Allagash offerings. Flavor is fruity and hoppy, refreshing, and for a change not too sweet.

750ml - Poured a darkish reddish amber in color with a fairly big whitish head that settled to a creamy foam over the beer. Some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is an interesting combination of Belgian yeast and plenty of citrus and herbal hops... really nice. Flavor is much more about the bready yeast than the hops. Hops make themselves known at the end... both in a nice hoppy flavor and some finishing bitterness. Unusual hoppiness for a Belgian, but a welcome (and *very* interesting) change from the usual Belgian Strong Ale. I really like this one...

750 ml bottle. pours amber in color with a white head which does not last long. Aroma is floral/citrus hops and malty. Taste is lite hops, yeasty, bready and lightly spicy, with a dry finish. Very good Hoppy Belgian Strong.

Dank yeast and fruit in the aroma. Cloudy light brown color with a large almond head. This one exploded all over when I opened it. Sweet beginning with a tart finish. Sweet sticky palate.

Poured from a 750ml caged and corked bottle and served in a tulip. This beer poured lightly hazed dark golden with a thick, rocky head of light beige foam. Excellent retention and lacing. The aroma was made up of strong lemony/orange citrus notes, a solid amount of caramel, and also some mildly spicy yeast esters. The flavor was lightly peppery, full of bright citrus, and had a sturdy caramel backbone. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and had light carbonation. This is a tasty beer, but it really lacks any Belgian or yeast character. It comes across as more of a regular IPA.

750 ml bottle. Shared with Bartzilla and a bunch of others. Nice color, nice aroma and a great name. Unfortunately, the beer wasn’t great, although it was pretty good. Some interesting sour flavors were a bit of a distraction. Bottle says this was $22. No way in hell was it worth that kind of coin.

Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of roasted, bread and caramel, light lemon and perfume for the hops, light to moderate notes of dough and earth for the yeast with hints of wood, wine and apple. Head is small, creamy, white with very little lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky tan. Flavorstarts slightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, oily and has a lively carbonation. A nice earthy beer, definitely a quality Belgian Strong.

Cloudy amber with a nice head. Earthy aroma with some sweet notes. Flavor starts out sweet and then the hop bitters come in. Crisp and clean. Very good.
