Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

Bottle. Rich copper amber beer with a dark cream colored head. Light sweet malt aroma with a bit of oak and fruity hops. Medium bodied. Rich malt flavor with a bit of caramel, slight grass, light spice and some fruit. Lingering malt with a bit of grass and earth.

My Bottom Line:
Peaches and oranges relax amongst the caramel maltiness, as catty, piney notes complacently participate. This decent Belgian Strong Ale ends up very fruity, but nowhere near the hop-happy creation advertised.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam sinks into the orange glow.
-Bready yeast hangs on to the caramel maltiness.
-Carbonation is comfortable.
-The finish is rather dry and somewhat bitter, but the hops don’t shine through enough to make it interesting.
-It’s always fun to try an Allagash experiment, but this one’s not worth the money in my book.

Bottle.

Bottle shared with tupalev, HogTownHarry, blankboy and jerc - HogTownHarry’s bottle. Reddish-amber with a big off-white head. Aroma is very nice, quite hoppy with some floral notes - almost IPA-like. Flavour is quite IPA-ish as well, with Belgian yeast notes. It’s an interesting combination, but it doesn’t totally work for me.

750 ML corked bottle 11/18/07: Amberish body w/a lasting, huge, cream colored head... Lightly hazed. Floral/piney hops, toasty malt, lightly doughy yeast... Some plum and apricot notes. Mildly peppery yeast, and some woody aromas. Dry finish in the flavor, toasted malt. Lightly sweet up front w/ floral and piney hop flavor. Low yeasty esters. Fruity in the finish and aftertaste. Woody mid palate. Lighter body, well hidden alcohol, dry finish, but lightly astringent. I liked this better than Interlude, and it’s an okay beer, but it might stand a bit of aging.

Draught @ Brouwer’s Café:   Dirty caramel, a little dark, large frothy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Heavy barnish nose with a subtle spiciness.   Hard to tell what they are going for here.   Very meaty and malty on the tongue.  Extremely bready.   Musty basement notes as well.   This one is a little different as I have no idea what its supposed to be.   Its like a heavy Saison, really heavy Saison.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, bubley.   Musty basement like finish, bready, a little bright and grassy.   Not bad, but certainly different.

10-May-07 750ml bottle Clouded, rusty-amber color with hefty white head of lasting, rocky foam. Aroma is signature Allagash beneath grassy, herbal, somewhat woody/pithy hops and very mild cookie malts. Deeper reflection reminds me of the musli I’ve been eating lately, which is full of nuts and seeds plus dried fruits. Mild and subtle, but more of a hodgepodge than having an obvious direction. Flavor is pleasant enough at first, yeasty, phenolic, and generic-fruity, it reminds of a sweetened breakfast cereal with some added bitters. Weird stuff. With temp, it gets just kooky and alcohol, though not that high, is just too apparent. Grapefruit pithiness emerges, giving at least a pleasant focal point to work through the rest of the bottle. Not sure what exactly what the point of this one was, but, for fourteen bucks, it was a miss.
